Adam Ant, the flamboyant 1980s pop star, has been sectioned and committed to a psychiatric hospital after being arrested for the second time in three days, police confirmed today. The 47-year-old was detained after being accused of pulling a gun at the Prince of Wales pub in Kentish Town, north London, on Saturday.
Two days later, on Monday evening, police again detained the performer - whose real name is Stuart Goddard - after finding him in nearby Camden Town, following calls from members of the public concerned for his safety.
Later that evening, Mr Goddard was sectioned under the 1983 Mental Health Act at the Royal Free hospital in north London, after being taken there by police.
After the alleged firearm incident, he was charged with criminal damage, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and possession of a firearm or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence. He was bailed to appear at Highbury magistrates court in London tomorrow.
From his psychiatric ward, he reportedly called the Sun newspaper yesterday to say: "I'm not mad". The Mirror newspaper also claimed to have received a rambling phone call from the singer.
He reportedly told the Mirror: "They've put me in the 'Alice in Wonderland' ward because they think I'm crazy... The whole thing's a conspiracy and they are out to get me."
Doctors at the psychiatric hospital can hold Mr Goddard for 28 days while they assess his condition.
The singer, famous for his painted face and outrageous stage gear, scored a string of hits including Stand and Deliver, and Prince Charming. He was scheduled to headline a 1980s nostalgia tour this spring.
