Why the hell should I buy "Singles"?

You're absolutely spot on. The drum production and Steve's drumming on Movement is superb. MH uses some really neat treatments there and moves them around in the mix really well.

As for 'Singles', I will be getting it for the 7" edits and there's a few other bits and bobs I don't have. For a tenner it's worth it. I agree with you about the cover though, it's crap.

New Order fans, eh? Surely the hardest people in the world to please. There's a review of "Singles" in this month's "Uncut", incidentally. The reviewer is American, so he rambles away about how good they were circa 'Movement'. Yawn.

I think the sleeve is OK. But, then, I'm 31 and such things don't matter as much to me as they did when I was 15. I've also just quit my job in a fit of pique and will be joing the merry ranks of Rocket Mick as NOOL's most unemployable poster.

Hmmm - this is all very generous of you guys, and even though I have no intention of retracting anything I've said, I'm a little unsure of what I'm gonna do now - telling your employer to go stick it up his/her arse is a great feeling, but I spent 8 years at university to get here and now I'm chucking it all away (I certainly ain't gonna get no glowing reference from this place). And I'm shite at everything else, and have no skills at all.

So what's the consensus: am I a man of integrity or just a knobhead?? I've also been told that in leaving without serving my notice there will be "legal ramifications": I won't get sued, will I?

I've left loads of jobs thinking that a different one would be better.

Well you have AGE on your side.I quit the IT domain at 41 and it has been VERY HARD to move on.But you either look at the POSITIVES or the NEGATIVES on your ACT OF TREASON!Was you really HAPPY doing the job there,living far away from home and is MONEY your main concern.I now have to face up to the fact i cannot attend the NEW ORDER concert next week.But neither do i have to work 12 hour shifts,worry about the pressure of my JOB or what will happen if i FAIL and lose it.I already did that and am still LIVING.Ok i will not be able to do SOME of the things that made me tick before.But i can get by.This in itself is NOT a good thing.But in the last 6 years i have worked only 2 of these and had plenty of time to ENJOY life,holidays and leisure.So a small price to pay.If as you have said you have told them to STICK their job there is no way you could go back.And you would reach the same point SOONER THAN YOU THINK again.So onwards and upwards.Treat this as your FACTORY FOLDING episode and LEARN from it.Today i have just found out that one of my workmates who has made LIFE enjoyable in a CRAP job has just been took to hospital.He has lost one KIDNEY and could die!MAkes you want to make the most of each day.Cos one day it will not be the SAME as it ever WAS!So don't panic and i am sure another door will open for you DR.Have a beer and RELAX. The most serious thing that's likely to happen is that your holiday entitlement for the year to date will be calculated and if you've taken more than you've already earned you could have to pay it back. Of course if you've taken less than you've earned, you should be paid for it. I'd be surprised if you were to get sued, unless there is something specific in your contract. Just to be sure, you should have got them to add the clause: "the lecturers have the freedom to fuck off".

Cheers, mate: holiday pay is bit weird in academia, 'cos your on holiday half the fucking year anyway. My guess is that contractually they could fuck me over but it's probably easier to just let me go: I'll be leaving various things behind that they'll need to run the programme which are my "intellectual property" and I guess a bit of give and take will probably come into effect. My main reason for knocking it on the head is 'cos film studies here is getting royally fucked over (yes, I know, whinging teachers etc!), and I think my departure will simply allow the powers that be to do away with it virtually altogether.

I'll miss the students, mind - they're very young and very pretty.

Apologies to people logging on to read a thread about folk moaning over the "Singles" CD. I now realise I'd never heard the original "Temptation" 7" and whaddaya know - it's really rather lovely.....

you might be--read the fine print in your contract very carefully. schools and universities have all sorts of rules, like one cannot change schools after one has signed a contract unless the head of school agrees to the transfer, etc. make sure you look after yourself, as the uni won't do it for you!

any plans for the future? film journalism, maybe? lots of magazines couldn't care less if you've left your job at uni.

Imagine the look on my face two years ago when I had a staff induction session and they told me that (a) students can find offence in pretty much anything you say or do, and (b) that in the case of legal action brought against you by a student the university will not help you.

Absolutley. Unfortunately our union are a bunch of wishy-washy idiots who I never wanted anything to do with after turning up for a strike a few months after I got here. There was weeks of frantic email insisting we man the picket lines en masse in protest over pay (though to be honest I was ambivalent about this given the massive debts students run up in exhange for a piss-poor education). Then the 'picket lines' were abandoned after less than an hour (and after the local TV had been down and filmed us) because it was "too cold".

Miners they certainly aren't.

So, I'm just presuming here, that paying union dues isn't an allowable tax deduction???

They won't sue you - termination clause are essentially unenforceable in employment contracts. The money it would cost them to bring an action against you would render suing you a pointless exercise.

They cannot withold any monies from you with the exception of any advances you may have had during your tenure.

That being said, if they really hate you, they may just decide to spend the money just to fuck you over.

I know someone at Empire who did stuff for their website for free for a year just to get her foot in the door... And contrbuting to Sight and Sound won't pay the rent.
