What did (does) Pernod taste like ?

It seemed to be an essential part of live performances, was it sweet, or bitter, like Pelinkovac (Maya might know what Pelinkovac tastes like) or Absynth ? How much alcohol was in there ? Did it make you halucinate ? Can it still be bought ? Would I be arrested if I tried to smuggle it across an international border ? I've never come across it in my life, an I've drank palinkas and rakijas you lot probably couldnt imagine.

Tastes of aniseed. Lovely!

Not very strong - 40% or so.

I was 20 before I realised that girls spit didn't taste of Pernod.

So it's basically asbsynth, like the one available regularly (and not expensively) in the Czech Republic. You can get the Czech variety here, but it's blue, and halucinogene. There's a Croatian variety, quite new, it's also green, and fits the Pernod description, but the Czech one is the masterpiece.

You certainly won't get arrested for taking it across borders - it's just another alcoholic drink (much like vodka, whiskey, etc)...

I used to drink it in my late teens (with blackcurrant - a la Pernod & Black), and (sometimes) used to add it to a pint of beer (lethal) :spit:

The French say that Pernod was "pour les enfants" - a childs version of Absinthe! It's all pastis, based on the same things. Ricard's nicer, in fact.

Like the Ballerman stuff where you'd have a glass of rakija and drink "na eks" (just gulp it all at once) and then down a pint of beer while the rakija was still in your mouth ?

you guys may know this but Absyinthe is illegal in the states.Bullshit! Havent had some for a few years since my buddy smuggled it from the czech republic.

Let me correct myself, I had some 2 yrs ago at a party. However, i wasnt convinced it was the real shite.

I thought you had to burn the alcohol off Absynthe while it was in the glass and on a sugarcube to make it work properly. That's how my mates do it. We get the really strong Absynthe from the Czech Republic, often via Hungary where I'm hoping to be going for a scholarship soon - and it's dead cheap threre too !

I don't think you're burning off the alcohol - the idea is to melt the sugar into the drink to sweeten it up a bit - it tastes a bit harsh on it's own!

I don't know why it's done, really - nothing tastes too harsh compared to homemade pre EU pre methanol checkup rakijas of the area ! I once drank somethink made of walnuts which literally had pieces of walnut crust floating in it. Made a very hardened mate almost pass out. I just know you're supposed to look ignorant if you don't burn it.

Pernod - happy memories.

Used to drink a bottle, get shitfaced, then go out partying for the night!

Rots your gut very badly though! I don't drink it any more.

It's still around, a good mixer apparantly.

Would like to add, how on earth did an alcholic drink make you hallucinate? It would only do that if it contained some other substance. IF it was just alcohol though, i don't see how that's going to make you hallucinate unless you are abnormal. If it's more than just alcohol though, please correct and inform me.

I think that wormwood gives real absinthe it's hallucinogenic properties. Otherwise it is just a potent alcoholic drink.

Never tried it myself, but some of my flatmates finished off a bottle and a considerable amount of vodka and didn't come out of their rooms for about three days afterwards!

Ah I see. Thanks for the info. Didn't they stop making it with Wormwood though? I read on Wikipedia.com that they eventually stopped making it with wormwood and in the end just with alcohol. So now its only just alcohol?!

Is it possible for you to get the Greek stuff, ouzo? That might give you an idea, though Pernod is the real stuff!

but the Czech one is the masterpiece. Julijana do you know what name this Czech one has? I'll be in Czech republic in december, nice opportunity to take some bottles back home!

anyone who thinks pernod tastes nice hasn't drunk that much, I used to drink tripples (the largest amount I could swallow in one) with pints of stella or tenants extra, after a few months doing that for 14 hours a day (i used to work in a pub, but was more pissed than the customers) it smells like shit and tastes worse, same thing happend with southern comfort, can't stand either now. I did try ouzo with blackcurrant hooch, bit tarty but when there's nothing left in the house and it's one of them nights, you try everything.

When George Best had a liver transplant, I got his old one 'cos it was better than mine!!!!

Don't drink much now, can't remember 1987 - 1996

Got to agree with that: it's rancid stuff, but that didn't stop me and quite a few others round here adopting it for several years during our yoof in homage to the Order.
