Has New Order properly lost the mystique that surrounded them in their heyday, and if so, when?
When Factory ended? When they started giving interviews? When they began playing sets dedicated only to "greatest hits"? When they released their 23rd compilation album? When they were on Baywatch? ETC. ETc. Etc. etc.
Where were you when the magic died?
Personally, I'd argue that they lost their mystique around 1986 or so. That period moving into Brotherhood was not a good change of pace.
The Baywatch appearance - truly appalling. I don't care how "ironic" it was supposed to be, it was horrible.
Anyhow, forget the mystique, at least we've got the tunes.
Yeah I think we all know the mystique is gone now, and has been for quite some time. That existed in the 80's only, and throughout the 90's I guess the band felt more relaxed to just let loose.
And now, well, they are just the general middle aged blokes, no mystique or image at all these days. Still all good though. I don't know what other people think, but the members themselves, Bernard, Hooky, Steve are not as serious about it as they were when they were starting out and in their prime. They're now established, and already been a success, so need for all the seriousness like before in the 80s, i'm sure others will agree, plus theyve probably changed as people throughout the years.
Now it's, release the odd album to keep the band in the present, and go do a few gigs here and there too keep the fans happy. Plus, the members themselves arn't getting a bad deal really are they, all the money they get from album/singles/touring etc. It's there living.

100% agree; although doing World In Motion, despite being a great song, comes a close 2nd.
The 'mystique' surely dies when you grow up?! It's one thing being a young teenager thinking music is the 'be all and end all' and that Curtis was some sorta God figure, but then reality kicks in and you realise they're just a bunch of normal blokes who've made a few class tunes. And there ain't much more to it than that! Of course, I'm sure there's still a few among us searching for DaVinciCode-like clues on the cover of Thieves though!

No mystique !! That's a lot of balls. It's never been why I LOVE NewOrder so much. Their work always speak for itself : GRAND !
The drop between the K2-esque heights of Technique to the Mariana Trench-like second side of Republic - now that's a hell of a fall.
I exaggerate, but not much.
They've dusted themselves off a little since then, but mystique is a lot like sugar: turn it onto toffee and you can't turn it back.
