Sorry if this has been done before recently - had a quick look and couldn't see that it had. Interested to know how peeps think the latest compilation compares with the others...

Without having yet heard Singles, I have nevertheless recorded a vote for Substance.

I never bought Sub on CD, I didn't have a player back then so only had vinyl and tape, liked retro cos it gave me a few tracks on CD I didn't have before, and as I don't have a record deck (although I have just bought the WFTSC singles)I hadn't heard stuff like Lonesome Tonight in years, and i just love that song, so, and I know a lot of people will disagree with me, it's retro for me.

retro, simply because it has the most material on it and it has the greatest variety (everything from remixes to live recordings).

I have to go for International, because that was the one that got me into NO.

I will be buying singles at the weekend, Substance is the dog's bollocks, it was and always will be great, the only downer was not getting the FULL version of TPK. The Best Of and Rest Of were extremely fookin shoddy, you ask 99% of fans and they'd have had AOC, Sunrise etc... on the albums, as for some of those remixes on The Rest Of they still send shivers down my spine! International is THE only official neworder product NOT in my collection, cos that was put together by probably the same dickhead that chose the tracks for Rest Of / Best Of ......Retro was another great idea wasted. That was only worth having for the Bonus Disc.

Loads of us have had the 7" versions of the singles on CD for a while now thanks to a couple of dedicated fans, but I am really looking forward to having "Singles" in my collection.

I need a beer :D

I think Substance is awesome - got me into the band back in 89. But it's let down by the horrible remakes of Temptation & Confusion.

International has a pretty good choice of tracks on a single cd, and is handy for the full 12" version of Touched By The Hand Of God for those that don't have it on cd already.

Retro was a major let-down. A huge opportunity for a kick-ass compilation missed :(

I think you should have split out the best of... between the Us and Uk versions. The US version has the best compilation track list that represents New Order. And it doesn't lie to you about Run 2. It just says Run.

:nonono: I think you'll find that Substance has been edited down by 40 odd seconds, the full 12" is 8:46. Go check :shades:

I surprised myself on this one - I immediatly looked for the Substance option, but I've realised that now I prefer Retro!!! It is missing loads of stuff but each of the (5) discs have good stuff & work well on their own.

So its Retro for me

My iPod. oh sorry! 'Singles' :)

I had to go for retro, just over substance. Sure retro was kind of an opportunity wasted....but I also think that the second half of disc one of Substance is not so strong - I quite often skip the single versions of BLT and Subculture, straight through to True Faith. Having said that, the first 7 tracks of Substance are pretty much untouchable...and some great bsides.

Even though 'Substance' is, say, absolutely SUBSTANCIAL (ooh poor me) and unique (quite all original 12" but some slightly reduced hence), I couldn't agree more with AgentWood and CuanaD about 'Retro.' to be the GEM of the lot.

Would have to be substance as that made me realise how much great stuff they'd done. Retro is a close 2nd and Rest Of is my third fave... probably 'coz I like a remix...

I was torn between Substance and Retro. Substance was my first NO album for sentimental reasons, but now I find Retro so much more comprehensive. I love both of them because I think Substance has the pre-club NO, and Retro has the post-club/Technique-era appeal. I am actually quite into the techno/electronica music, so I do rate the mixes and dance-y songs! But Ceremony and Atmosphere will always be my favorite JD songs.

I was listening to Atmosphere tonight. So beautiful. I could listen to that one over and over and over.

In spite of several posts favoring Retro, Substance is clearly winning the vote.
