Sorry if this has been discussed before. Have just joined (great forum by the way).
Does anybody know the meanings behind some of NO's song titles. Obviously we all know that titles bear little relation to the songs themselves but does anyone know why??

Welcome to the forum mate. Basically their songtitles mean fook all, they've been quoted as saying they make them up or get them from posters / newspapers etc...
Thieves Like Us, The Perfect Kiss, Vanishing Point and 1963 were taken from titles of films weren't they?
Weren't they going to title Power Corruption and Lies "Piss Off You Lot" as well? 
Whilst we're on this subject, anyone know which of the "Republic" tracks with the working titles "Techno2" and "Identify" turned out to be?? I remember reading about these named tracks when the NME had a news update on the album's progress.

Same with In A Lonely Place (named by JD, of course) and Cries & Whispers. It's interesting though, thinking about how the songs named after movies might relate to the films themselves.

Pretty sure Techno2 might have been the working title for Technique. Wasn`t there a rumour at the time the whole album would be acid house influenced?

'Thieves Like Us' was a Robert Redford film (and actually fairly watchable) as for the others, sorry, I'm not a film buff...
Vanishing Point is a great 70s road movie, and was also used as a title for a very good Primal Scream album. Their album captured the essence of the film, with sound clips and other references.

I read somewhere that they wanted to title PC&L "How Does It Feel?" but Crass beat them to the punch for there lp taking a piss on Thatcher for the Falklands war "How does it Feel to be the Mother of 10,00 Dead?" Or something like that.

I think Vanishing Point is on the telly sometime this week. I remember seeing it in the TV Guide at the weekend.
Also, I think the Newcastle Utd. fanzine is called True Faith but I don't know which came first - the song or the fanzine title.
The mode of titling started with Joy Division. Like the album art, titles were supposed to accentuate atmosphere and interpretation. Later on, the band became more playful, but I think as of late most of their titles are pretty standard pop titles.

No. "Techno2" was first mentioned in 1993 on the NME News Page announcing the forthcoming Republic album, not Technique.
Actually I remember now reading smoewhere else that that working title became either Spooky or Chemical (both tracks started with harsh crunchy techno loops or summat), but as for the other title "Identify", I'm buggered if I know what song that one became.
