New Order at Queen Eliz Hall, London

Well I know many,if not all, will disagree with me but if you weren't down the front, it wasn't worth being there. No one from Row G back moved. At all. Bar Vinny at my shoulder. Occasionally. I was extremely disappointed despite an all Joy Division set. I could see quite a few people from NOOL enjoying themselves but in my opinion it was a waste of time. No one stirred at all in the upper stalls and I should have saved my money. I wasn't moved at all. New Order are not all they are cracked up to be when you are halfway away from the front of the stage. No matter what anyone says. Way too conservative a venue. I wonder what Peely would have thought of it all. Probably chuffed that these bands would do this in his honour. But possibly wished they had done something better somewhere else.

However it was good to meet up with some of the NOOLs beforehand.

i thought this was fuckin fantastic, met peter hook before hand who was a really nice bloke, and then a joy division setlist, it doesnt get any better. shadowplay and warsaw!!

It was indeed - some (or all?) of the tracks will be played on Thursday at some point (not sure of times) as part of Radio 1's schedule will be dedicated to all things Peely... :)

As I said in the Ceremony forum, Peely hosted a number of gigs at the QEH - this is why the venue was chosen in the first place - it actually had something to do with Peely! :)

the peel tribute starts at 7.00pm on radio 1 till 1ish i think

You've gotta be kidding?

To see NO do an all JD set and play stuff (Warsaw) they haven't played in 25+ years was priceless.

I was boogying away in the upper stalls; the view wasn't any better than being at the front at Hyde Park for me, but it didn't matter, it was a night of PURE CLASS and Peely would have been very proud- he promoted them as JD and that's what NO were paying respect to.

sounds like it was an excellent night, and the choice of songs: truly amazing ! I've turned all green this morning

He's entitled to his opinion...

We were on the lower / upper stalls boundry and had a lovely time. Didn't jump about much, but it was one of those occasions where open mouthed staring was more in order. Came away on a complete high. It's a shame not everyone was moved in the same way.

Excellent - you can clearly see Al's Viking's badge on Bernard's shirt on picture 26 - I knew I wasn't imaging things

I think I remember reading that Peel and Delia Smith are/were neighbours in Suffolk. If not immediate neighbours then certainly close by. Bit strange that she should choose Suffolk rather than Norfolk given her football allegiance.

Very envious of all those who went last night. Shadowplay AND Warsaw. Drop me bacon sandwich! And there was me thinking although a total JD set is a superb idea that it would be the usual JD songs. They never cease to amaze me, even now. Hopefully last night's set will get some nice DVD release from the BBC, failing that I'll get a bootleg.

Was Warsaw the first song they ever wrote ? Even if it's not, it's close and a very poignant choice for a special Peel gig.

Probably not the first song they wrote, but was on the Ideal Living EP and, i believe, was the first JD song Peel played. Might be wrong.

I know, I need to look it up somewhere. Might be mentioned in Jackson's "Ideal For Living". I've got a feeling I read a Hooky quote ages ago where he said the first song might have been "Gutz" and that he thought it was awful. This really makes me yearn for a recording of the first ever gig, no matter how ropey they might have been. If only.

Her husband's a Norwich fan. That's how she ended up becoming a fan. Although there is an infamous picture of her wearing an Ipswich rosette at the 1978 FA Cup Final. We soon knocked that out of her.

Yes, ha-ha. It reminds me of the bi-sexual tag that Alan Partridge accidentally gave Dennis Law. But I guess if he'd said Delia then radio Norwich would have cancelled his 4am show.

Interesting stuff from Hooky saying they've been thinking about just doing a Joy Division set for a while. Perhaps if we go on about it they'll do that and a separate New Order set as well. Blimey, that would be a night to remember.
