Steve singing

Does he ever sing? Or did he ever sing? Was it ever caught on tape, more importantly.

I've heard that he sang during the early days, in Procession, I think it was.

Anyone care to share stories, or links to pages with downloads?

I've tried to scout new-order.net but I get lost. Is there a member section or something?

ED: While reading the site I saw that WIM was played at Finsbury - 511. Why wasn't this on the DVD? Would have loved seeing Gillain having a dance. I've had a look at the DVD to see if she was sidestage but I couldn't see her. Seems rather strage to eliminate what would have been a fun thing to see - what was the point in doing it?

it's early in the morning (for me) so not 100% but i believe there is a demo recording of him doing the vocals for ceremony as a try out somewhere. (heart & soul box set?)

your best bet would have been the other two recordings but can't think of any tracks from there.

new order dvds are littered with missed tracks, it's nothing new, just a foible we have to put up with.

The reason WIM is missing is because, at the gig, Barney moans about not having rehearsed its probably felt it wasnt up to standard for official release.

Mil, you'd be wanting the Western Works Demos there - apparently Steve sang on at least one song on these pre-Gillian recordings, although the recording is none to clear. You can hear Ceremony from this demo tape here. The full session also has the song Homage (never released but played live a few times I think) and a few others that ended up on Movement. I didnt know New Order did rehearsals!

Steve tried out a fair bit on the vocals, including during the first American tour. Even tho he was quite successful at it ( better than the contemporary barney anyway), they quite rightly decided that a drummer singing looks like some kind of evil mutant retard from a horror movie.....witness phil colins.

Bernard got the gig in the end cos he worked his guitar in and around the vocals anyway......and oddly enough, his singing really started to suck balls when he started this "comping" along on the guitar crap he seems to enjoy these days. Just a thought.

Also worth mentioning that of course, allowing a drummer constant access to a mic sensitive enough to hear what he says ( drum mics are always far too low and far too tightly gated) is a recipe for complete catastrophe.

Legend has it Steve had the best voice out of all four of them.

I heard a little while back Steve doing backing vocals on Tasty Fish, if you listen really carefully. He does seem to have a very good voice.
