I think it's because they haven't had the chance to get sick of playing them for 20 odd years.
I wouldn't say that they're better doing JD songs than their own, its just that to hear JD songs being played live once more is a bit of a treat. I saw them play warsaw and shadowplay last week and it was fantastic, partly because I never thought I'd witness such songs live.
Hooky said in the NME that playing the JD songs at the Peel gig seemed to free things up.
I think if they sound better it's down to the things people have said, less equipment to worry with and playing songs that are old but seem fresh. Differences of taste I suppose, both styles have their merit.
Well, i've seen New Order in a DVD performing some JD songs. Though i adore these songs, i didn't like New Order playing them. The reason is that Bernard's voice isn't the appropriate one for such "rough" , "heavy" and "dark" songs. It's suitable only for rather "light" songs like those of the New Order era. I don't blame them for playing those songs today, i just don't like it very much.
What do you think?
I agree that Barney's voice isn't as suited to the JD stuff as Ian's, but that's to be expected - same as it would sound odd hearing Ian sing something like 'True Faith'. However, I do feel that Barney/New Order have written some fairly dark stuff - especially during the 'Movement' era. And how about 'Sunrise'? (a personal favourite). Still, I enjoy NO performing anything except WIFM! ![]()
