I dont know if this is where I should ask the question-but does anyone know the real lyrics to Temptation?

There seems to be variations of:

Bolts from above hit the people down below Votes from above hit the people down below Thoughts from above hurt the people down below

Im sure the lyrics printed on this site (as well as in the New Order 1981-1989 music book) are incorrect. Plus, Im sure fans have got other variations of their own, that they'd be kind enough to share.

Volts.

Batteries. Lighting.

It's 'Thoughts' on the '87 Version. Never heard 'Votes'...

Volts from above. Its about lightning. A kid in our class at school was killed by lightning in Drinkwater Park. We all had to stand at the front of the school when his funeral procession went past.

Is that what Procession is about, then?

I've always thought it was "bolts" in the earlier versions, and "thoughts" as the song evolved.

It all follows on. Childhood experiences linger long and never desert the subconscious.

Well, if they re-recorded it again it would have to be "BOATS....from above...." wouldn't it?

Just for Barney's sake. :)

Come to think of it I always thought it was "boats" anyway - and then my mind's eye would start picturing some apocalyptic scenes where innocent people were getting crushed by sailing vessels of various sizes and weights landing on their heads.

But it could still be "Bolts from above", i.e. Lightning Bolts?

I always thought it was "Thoughts from above hit the people down below", but I never really looked at any lyrics!

I always preferred "bolts", as to imply construction bolts.

I've always thought it was 'bolts'.

Listening to the Secret Machines mix it sounds like "Faults from above hurt the people down below" - but I must admit I've always heard it as "Bolts from above hit the people down below"

Moby's version will have the right lyrics.:uhoh:

Listening more closely, it could be vaults as well. You know, like safes. They fall on people all the time in cartoons. :uhoh:

I always thought it was "force".

Last week at Kilburn I sang "cunts from above", because I was that happy it was the last song in the set!

I have always thought it as being Faults from above. As its normally the people above (status, or have power) that do indeed hurt the people below them If that makes sense!

I have always heard 'Bolts from above' from both original 12" an 7" myself...

I'm listening to the original 12" right now. No, there's definitely a bit of a sound in the middle of the word that warrants suspicion that it is "bolts" or "thoughts". "Force" flows as one completely smooth syllable, and this has a slight lurch in it, like an "r" in Danish. I'm almost certain it's "bolts" or "thoughts". Just my two cents, as it were. :D

something i've wondered about, myself.

for several years i thought the lyrics to LWTUA were:

when rudy bites hard and ambitions are low and resentment rides high 'cause the mushrooms won't grow.

NEW ORDER MUSIC 1981-1989 publ 1990 has sheet music for 20 NO songs incl Temptation -

Bolts from above hit the people down below people in this world without no place to go bolts from above hit the people down below people in the world we have no place to go

Sound good to me

The lyrics may be interpretations by the publishers although the book does include comments by Barney and Hooky

There's also Barney's note on 1963 setting out his "theory" that JFK hired Oswald to kill Mrs K so he "could do one with M Monroe” and that MM killed herself when she found out Oswald hit the wrong target! (dates of the events don't tie up of course but what the hey) H

Yeah, noticed how they were always made by 'Acme Ltd'!

I think that it is 'thoughts' but I usually make up my own words as I go along anyway :D

Depends which lyrics you check! :evil4:

The Warner Chappell site has the following:

"A Heaven I'd Get With A Hope Just Like The Feeling Inside It's No Joke And Though It Hurts Me To Treat You This Way Betrayed My Words I'd Never Heard Too Hard To Say Up Down Turn Around Please Don't Let Me Hit The Ground Tonight I Think I'll Walk Alone I'll Find My Soul As I Go Home

Each Way I Turn I Know I'll Always Try To Break This Circle That's Been Placed Around Me From Time To Time I Find I've Lost Some Need That Was Urgent To Myself I Do Believe Up Down Turn Around Please Don't Let Me Hit The Ground Tonight I Think I'll Walk Alone I'll Find My Soul As I Go Home

Oh You've Got Green Eyes Oh You've Got Blue Eyes Oh You've Got Grey Eyes And I've Never Seen Anyone Quite Like You Before No I've Never Met Anyone Quite Like You Before Thoughts From Above Hit The People Down Below People In This World We Have No Place To Go Oh It's The Last Time Oh I've Never Met Anyone Quite Like You Before Oh No I've Never Met Anyone Quite Like You Before"

Hmmm... :D
