New Order at the Metro Melbourne

What a great show! Its late and I have work in the morning so I will keep this short. Much better than the BDO show. Both the band and the crowd were really into it from the start. Set list (probably minus a track and out of order was: Crystal Transmission Regret Ceremony 60MPH Atmosphere Slow Jam Close Range Touched by the hand of God Bizarre Love Triangle True Faith Temptation LWTUA

Isolation Blue Monday

Barney was in fine form all night, and Hooky had a great time although he was clearly struggling with the heat by the end. Set had a few cockups but it didn't matter. More later!

True, but look what else we did get - Ceremony, Transmission, Isolation, Atmosphere and LWTUA. I thought slow jam was the weakest of the night, but the set and the show was great. They seem to like playing Melbourne. They played a great show in 1987 at Festival Hall also.

The tape of the 1987 show belies the "great" comment !!!!!

While we appreciate the fact that you're some sort of NewOrder live veteran Sloppy, please understand that many others around the world frickin NEVER get the chance to see the band.. I personally waited 15 eternal years to see them live at Reading 98. While some setlists and performances may seem tiresome to your seasoned eyes, attending these gigs is like Christmas for many others across the globe. Seeing them bumble through Blue Monday is a damn godsend. Try not to diminish their experiences too much.

I got a text from Allen J (the wonders of modern technology)who said that this gig was the best of the lot so far and that it was an 'electric atmosphere'and crowd were well up for it.

I believe some of the British contingents suntans are coming along better than others though...!;)

Managed to hook up with Allen J and Jonny Giles on the night - lovely pair of blokes. Absolutely magnificent performance, fantastic atmosphere and Ceremony threatened to lift the roof off the Metro. It would be fair to say a good night was had by all.... CTD

Seriously why the fuck do they play it when they have, well like 5 better tracks off the album (Turn My Way, Primitive Notion, Vicious Streak, Someone Like You) which they dont play.

It's strange reading how all thought it was so electric at The Metro last night - my friend and I agreed it seemed a little unenthusiastic generally, and as for the blonde Shazzas who made pains of themselves up front and only knew 'True Faith' and 'BLT', well...

I guess my only disappointment was no 'Your Silent Face' (which I was SOOOO looking forward to) or 'Love Vigilantes' - leaving the gig entirely 'PC&L' and 'Lowlife' free, not to mention the lack of anything from 'Technique' or 'Brotherhood' (excluding the extremely obvious one, of course). :(

But when Hooky does his bass monster thing a metre in front of you I guess it doesn't matter so much... and it was just so amazing to see them again after fifteen years - and this time they acknowledged our presence! :)

That did piss me off as well Amy, having chicks around cos they may know BLT or True Faith from Fox or some shite, and this annoying chick with the fishnet top who snuck up in front of me, and she didnt know any of the songs either grrrrr.

Anyways I thought it was very lively from where I was (4 rows from the front or so right side of stage) and it was just magic with Hooky doing his god bass thing like a metre or 2 away.

I thought the Crystal they did last night was just magic, better than BDO. But Slow Jam, that just bewilders me, Barney nearly cocked it up too.

Funny was also during Blue Monday when Hooky came down to the crowd gave a few people a feel of his guitar, only for Hooky to realise they had completely detuned it. Hooky spent the rest of the song just trying to add noise rather than play anything.

And giving the crowd a choice between Rock The Shack and Isolation, I mean really?

I guess attitudes to how electric an audience is vary, but I thought the crowd was up for this show more than the other 3 NO shows I have seen. Clearly Barney thought the crowd was into it, and I thought this set the scene for the entire show. Having never been to the Metro before I didn't know how it would go, but you sure can't beat being in touching distance of Hooky! Didn't mind them not playing YSF as they played it Monday, agree that Love Vigilantes was the main omission. I thought they changed the play list shortly prior to the show, as Barneys mouth organ was taken away at about 10.45. This suggests either YSF of LV was planned. Alex, you are right about my view of Slow Jam. Where did you disappear so fast to after the show. Also I have a web address for the bloke who took lots of pictures last night. I will try to get him to post them here (he was one of the lucky ones that got pictures with Hooky and Stephen at Gaslight!) Still think it was a great show. Yes it was not without technical gliches, but nothing to destroy the bands mood. If UK shows in the past have been much better than this then you guys are incredibly privileged. For me last night was just fine!

I really needed to go to the toilet, straight after and I thought the longer i left it the harder it owuld be to ever get out of there. Sorry bout that, I dont think Mitch got in BTW, he would have school today hehehe

This is the bloke here. Nice to meet you all, so to speak. Great night last night. I didn't have a ticket but managed to get one at cost from the first person I asked when I arrived at the Metro. I was even happier to see that I was getting an Underground Lovers gig as well although I have seen them do a lot better to say the least.

I have about 50 photos from Monday's BDO NO gig and probably about 30 from last night (still have to edit them down to a decent number.) Also I might add the two of me and Hooky and me and Stephen at Gaslight. Not sure when I will have time to get them on line. Probably early next week at this rate. I'll post something here when I do.

I will also update the rest of my page as I have ignored it over the last couple of years. Good meeting you Talbs and Alex (I think I know who each of you are.) Sounds like everyone there was within two feet of me - including fishnet girl who I was ready to kill!

Your right i didn't get in, i rang a mate who was there and he said there wasn't very many people selling tickets out the front so i didn't go in. Bit dissapointed, but what can you do eh? Might just have to chase them round the UK when i win the lotto.

I've finally tracked down that copy of Melbourne Festering Hole 87 (your words not mine !!) I promised you (couldn't find it when I went home for Christmas), and it will be in the post to you within the next two days - sorry you've had to wait so long for it !

Sloppy, since you have mentioned the Festival Hall 1987 show again, I just thought I would put my previous "great" show in context. The night before they played the Venue. This was the first time I saw them, and NO put on one of those sombre performances. I was at the front and enjoyed the show but had gone alone. The Festival Hall show was totally different in mood (I guess so was mine as I was there with a group of Uni mates). It was one of those hot Melbourne summer nights, and unlike the night before the band was in much better mood ( at least from my more distant vantage point). I can still remember Barney and Hooky coming out (for the encore?) topless, just adding to the great atmosphere. I had a great night, although it is quite possible that the show was not the best technically! The show was also 15 years ago so memories fade. Who knows how last night would sound on tape, and who cares. It was a great night!

It's amazing how things sound different ! The tape of the Venue gig the night before sounds like a great performance, one of my favourites, certainly in terms of the songs played anyway. I guess they were both nights you just had to be there to appreciate it ! Anyway, if you want tapes of both nights, let me know.

Alex... It sounds like I was in much the same spot as you, only over near the poles at the left - hence 'Temptation' as well as bein ga musical highlight was just all the more divine when Hooky graced "our side". :) Sounds like I was lucky to avoid the fishnetted harridan, but THAT blonde with a camera - AGH! Still, my look of death gave her the message! I guess things went off more to the right - with Hooky there it's understandable. :) Thanks for letting su know what happened to Hooky's tuning, I've heard some ramshackle Blue Mondays at times, yet still couldn't help but wonder why it suddenly kind of fell in a gloriously messy heap like that...

Talbs... Due to severe money probs I couldn't make the BDO, I took the chance and waited for a solo show to be announced. If I had known I'd miss YSF though I think I would have braved the ugliness of the showgrounds! :|

I'll avoid stating my opinion as to how incredibly far up their own bottoms Vince and Co vanished last night (oops, too late! ;)) and hopefully help you out with your query... :)

If you liked the slightly Kraftwerky tinged stuff a la last night then check out their last album, 'Cold Feeling' and I doubt you'll be disappointed. Otherwise they have quite a varied canon of work, my personal favourite of which is 'Dream It Down'.

And when did Vince morph into Shaun Ryder?!!!

I find that the technical glitches are all part of the overall experience and wouldn't want to miss them. It wouldn't be the same if everything was perfect, would it now?!

I didn't mind the UL but there better stuff was done on the Rushall Station Album, a little bit more pop and not so much distoted electronica. Have to agree about Temptation, sond of the night, especially since Hooky did decide to grace our side of stage and hammed it up fo the crowd. Soem comments about the crowd. Much more into the night than the BDO but still not a raving frenzy i have seen some crowds in. The people right up against the fence on the left side near the pole were just pissing me off, they stood there like cold fish and had the nerve to glower at me everytiem the accidently got jostled by my dancing. Obviously not very appreciative of my moves!!!! My mate was blown away and i was very happy to see Isolation, TBTHOG, Ceremony and Atmosphere added to the set as i had only seen them previously at the BDO. Oh well, now have to hope that this Chemicals collaboration will force them back out on the road and we can catch them late this year or next year with the brothers!!!!!!

You must have been almost right in front of me! I was essentially hugging the front pole my friend and I staked out at 8:05 until right near the end, but certainly wasn't cold fishing it - well, I was bopping about and singing every word like a nong, so I don't think I was! :)

As far as I know the only recipients of my glowering were the blonde camera-wielding bimbo who pinballed herself in to us all after a few songs - and a guy the size of the Empire State building who kept pushing from behind when we were all trying to herd out of the place...

My only disappontment was the young lasses standing next to me, turning to each other at the beginning of 'Transmission' and asking "Who's Joy Division?"....

Would like to have seen them play 'Perfect Kiss', but I guess they can't play all requests...

As to the Shaun Ryder reference about Vince from UG... thanks.. it was plaguing me all night as to who he reminded me of with his dancing.... :D

And BTW: What was the name of the guitarist? He looked familiar, but I missed his name....

Anyways the fishnetted freak was the lowlight, one of the higlights as I said before was my mate elbowing this guy in the gut when the crowd started to rush up to the front for Transmission.

Another thing I noticed for the Radiohead fans here, does anyone else see a similarity between the new live version of Isolation and Radiohead's Idioteque?

But Slow Jam, I used to half defend it but its really, well just shit, right on the same level as Run Wild and State of The Nation.

Now im listening to the Electronic Ecstacy version of Fine Time, that would of been great for them to play me thinks.

http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Stage/9037/ for all things Underground Lovers (you can buy albums through them too) I think I like Ways T' Burn as a great spaced out wash of guitar and noise with the dream like lyrics floating though the haze. If you are more into beats and clean production then go for some of the offshoot stuff by GBVG (the intials of Glen and Vince (Guitarist and Singer). They have a few releases of remixes and more dance oriented stuff. As they list New Order as one of their influences I suspect they may have been a bit out of it on Wednesday - but still, they are a great band to catch on their own turf.
