I always thought Gill was a minger, but Phil's a ginger so it's a lose lose situation, i suppose it comes down to who'sbest a playing music and who's best staying at home looking after the kids, don't mean to be sexist though![]()

whats he done thats so bad?
Phil = Top Man and great New Order guitarist
Gillian = Lovely woman no longer in New Order
Phil is now 1/4 of New Order and in my opinion a brilliant quarter. Looking forward to seeing him on stage at the Apollo ![]()

Too much guitar wankery.Made NO live ,at times, just A.N. Other rock band sound.

Better than remaining some quasi-synth-poppery-depeche-mode thing!
LOVE the guitars - the more the merrier.
Then again, I know I'm in the minority, but I didn't really rate 'Technique'.
Well, Pet Shop Boys fans want one thing, Smiths fans want the other! ![]()
It's just one of those I prefer one thing/you prefer the other.
Let's just be happy they're still releasing material and PLAYING LIVE! ![]()

You obviously weren't at Oxegen for his 25 minute proggy solo in the middle of Bizarre Love Triangle. At one stage, a it was just him and his guitar with a 50 piece gospel choir.
Dont get me wrong, i love guitars. But i prefer Barneys way of playing.Picking at the axe.The perfect example of Barney`s style is the part he played on Shoot Speed/Kill Light by Primal Scream. That ,to me , is great guitar work.

But He ain't barney is he,
Just thought - the day before WFTSC (Album) was released - NOOL published an exclusive - the first published review of WFTSC (Okay -that was because Nick published it on the Sunday-the day before) but in that review, I praised Phil:
"It has all the promising sparks of the side projects, but gels them together as a whole. One of the most pleasing aspects of this album is that Phil Cunningham seems to have slotted in seamlessly - he'll never be Gillian (beacuase she's irreplaceable) but he's certain to be accepted as the fifth member of New Order - and very welcome he is too, judging by the guitar work here! He lends the album a similar feel to the 'Electronic' albums, featuring Johnny Marr of The Smiths. He also adds some surprising guitar parts that lift what may have originally been fairly 'ordinary' ideas - by New Order standards - to a whole new level."
I've seen certain parts of that review both echoed and QUOTED (without reference to NOOL!!!) in various publications (Bastards! And lazy journalists - Bastards!)
If you want to read the whole review, go to the 'Music' page and check out WFTSC reviews.
And I'll post again at the end of December to see if people agree with my conclusion!

Bernard states that exact same on the 5 11 Finsbury DVD.States that Phil comes from "a little place called Oswaldwhistle"
I think Phil does a great job and shouldnt be knocked. Its a tough one, joining a band who have had such a distinguished career. 20 years with the same line up is impressive. God knows how many changes to their line up Oasis have made in 10 years.
Phil's a great guitarist and better keyboard player than Barney live (probably a better singer as well). On 511 I love his work on Close Range and Blue Monday. He brings something new to the table and ensures its fresh and less intense for other band members to work alongside one another.

wow.janice battersby,hayley and now phil.this place is crawling with b list celebs.lol.
If Phil C***ingham likes to rock out so much with his axe whilst Bernard gesticulates like a dancing dad on happy pills then we really need someone to oversee the keyboards don't we? I just wish for Gillian to return to the fold cos it's really not the same without her. She gives the New Order sound that unmistakable elegance and occasional fragility that they now lack with it being an all-male thing.
So yeah - since Gillian went I really miss that feminine touch to NO ..... and no, Barney's notorious boobs don't fucking well count. ![]()

I agree 100%.I too miss the elegant keyboard flourishes and fragility she brings (brought).
But Phil's actually not bad at times. On 5 11 I love his guitar work on She's Lost Control and Blue Monday.

Listen to yourself! Alright, he’s been with the band since 2001, he doesn’t need to prove anything to you lot. He’s a great guitarist indeed. It’s only natural for him to bring a new vibe to their music and you know you love it … yet you keep bitching over it like the guy’s a fookin retard or something. Bet you’d never say that to his face though. All I’m saying is you’re not being fair to him. And yeah give me HNWYD over Guilt any day I say. Would love to see you moshing while Guilt is on. Bollocks!
Mr Cunnilingus may be a great guitarist, I won't discuss it. But... I don't like the brit-pop direction New Order has been following since 2001. I don't know if Mr Cunnilingus bears some responsibility in it, but I regret that the band didn't hire someone more interested in synth programming and electronic music. But then again, this is not a statement against Mr Cunnilingus but rather about the band's musical choices.
By the way, Maya, I'm sure you like him just because of his funny name.

ALRIGHT, KEEP YA BLOODY HAIR ON!. JEEZ!
Hes cool. And its silly to live in the past, i know ,and wish Gillian was still in the frame. But times change and it`s not the 80s anymore.Alright.Point taken.Fookin ell.

No problem with Phil, really. I just feel somebody with some electronic expertise could bring so much more.

It's contracted slang for "Pillow Buttock" apparently. ;)

yea thats true plus someone else would not have been from oswaldtwistle
I like Phil. I think he is a great addition to the band. However, NO needs a dedicate synth player if they plan to play those songs that require synths and keys. NO should be a 5 piece these days.

Interesting perspective, but you are all a bunch of Doyles![]()
Mark down another vote for Phil here; he's a welcome addition to the band IMO, so leave the poor sod alone! He's not a 'great' guitarist (well, comparatively I guess he's more competent than Barney) but he certainly adds another dimension that was lacking.
The accusation of 'Guitar wankery' is utter bollocks - it's not like he launches into 'Flight of the bumblebee' solos is it?

Guitar Wankery, is just too easy to roll off the tongue
No need to give Phil a bum rap really is there![]()
Lets face it,he could of been any fucker for all we care...He can play, so might as well let him, and enjoy New Order a while longer![]()
At least Phil doesnt try and hog the sportlight - he has sort of stayed quiet like he should and not tried to claim NO as 'his' band, he knows his place, I think.
Although, I'm not a tremendous fan of extended guitair solos, and hope they will be few and far between. He never really fluffs the keyboards live - which is what I liked about Gillian, but I can't exactly blame him for that, can I?
Some gents here need to face that their teenage fantasy is no longer there! Are you lacking something to ogle during live performances? Just kidding. Phil is NOT a girl - maybe if he was this wouldnt be such a big problem. I know I liked there being a female influence on the music, cos I'm young I sort of... idolise Gillian a bit, corny as it sounds.
I think Phil is great - but its justified to miss the original line up that penned all the hits. It must be rally tough for Phil to step into that position - I think he deserves praise for handling it so well. I dont think he or his musical talent should be attacked in any way. He's a great musician. ![]()
Hi People..my first post and happy to be here ! To all these haters (or non believers) of Phil..lay off the friggin guy, like someone mentioned previous hes been with band since 2001..damn he must be doing something right ! line-ups need a shake up/change round..brings new elements to the mix..i knew phil when we were kids..good mates at the time, same school/just lived round the corner (oh and its not oswaldthistle in Lancashire..where he was born, he himself hails from Macclesfield..well a little village just outside)..this guy as a 9/10yr old used to sit in his bedroom for hours on end practicing while we pissed around climbing roofs and doing other non-events. He showed a lot of dedication from an really early age, so u cant say where he is now aint thru want of trying..i say top f****in marks to him...give the lad a chance and stop weeping over the past....adios !!!!
