I always thought Gill was a minger, but Phil's a ginger so it's a lose lose situation, i suppose it comes down to who'sbest a playing music and who's best staying at home looking after the kids, don't mean to be sexist though![]()

whats he done thats so bad?
Phil = Top Man and great New Order guitarist
Gillian = Lovely woman no longer in New Order
Phil is now 1/4 of New Order and in my opinion a brilliant quarter. Looking forward to seeing him on stage at the Apollo ![]()

Better than remaining some quasi-synth-poppery-depeche-mode thing!
LOVE the guitars - the more the merrier.
Then again, I know I'm in the minority, but I didn't really rate 'Technique'.
Well, Pet Shop Boys fans want one thing, Smiths fans want the other! ![]()
It's just one of those I prefer one thing/you prefer the other.
Let's just be happy they're still releasing material and PLAYING LIVE! ![]()

You obviously weren't at Oxegen for his 25 minute proggy solo in the middle of Bizarre Love Triangle. At one stage, a it was just him and his guitar with a 50 piece gospel choir.
Dont get me wrong, i love guitars. But i prefer Barneys way of playing.Picking at the axe.The perfect example of Barney`s style is the part he played on Shoot Speed/Kill Light by Primal Scream. That ,to me , is great guitar work.

But He ain't barney is he,
Just thought - the day before WFTSC (Album) was released - NOOL published an exclusive - the first published review of WFTSC (Okay -that was because Nick published it on the Sunday-the day before) but in that review, I praised Phil:
"It has all the promising sparks of the side projects, but gels them together as a whole. One of the most pleasing aspects of this album is that Phil Cunningham seems to have slotted in seamlessly - he'll never be Gillian (beacuase she's irreplaceable) but he's certain to be accepted as the fifth member of New Order - and very welcome he is too, judging by the guitar work here! He lends the album a similar feel to the 'Electronic' albums, featuring Johnny Marr of The Smiths. He also adds some surprising guitar parts that lift what may have originally been fairly 'ordinary' ideas - by New Order standards - to a whole new level."
I've seen certain parts of that review both echoed and QUOTED (without reference to NOOL!!!) in various publications (Bastards! And lazy journalists - Bastards!)
If you want to read the whole review, go to the 'Music' page and check out WFTSC reviews.
And I'll post again at the end of December to see if people agree with my conclusion!

Bernard states that exact same on the 5 11 Finsbury DVD.States that Phil comes from "a little place called Oswaldwhistle"
I think Phil does a great job and shouldnt be knocked. Its a tough one, joining a band who have had such a distinguished career. 20 years with the same line up is impressive. God knows how many changes to their line up Oasis have made in 10 years.
Phil's a great guitarist and better keyboard player than Barney live (probably a better singer as well). On 511 I love his work on Close Range and Blue Monday. He brings something new to the table and ensures its fresh and less intense for other band members to work alongside one another.

wow.janice battersby,hayley and now phil.this place is crawling with b list celebs.lol.
If Phil C***ingham likes to rock out so much with his axe whilst Bernard gesticulates like a dancing dad on happy pills then we really need someone to oversee the keyboards don't we? I just wish for Gillian to return to the fold cos it's really not the same without her. She gives the New Order sound that unmistakable elegance and occasional fragility that they now lack with it being an all-male thing.
So yeah - since Gillian went I really miss that feminine touch to NO ..... and no, Barney's notorious boobs don't fucking well count. ![]()

I agree 100%.I too miss the elegant keyboard flourishes and fragility she brings (brought).
But Phil's actually not bad at times. On 5 11 I love his guitar work on She's Lost Control and Blue Monday.
