Disorder

For some reason this track by Joy Division always seems to get very little mention, so i am i the only one who thinks "Disorder" was one of their best? This was the first track by them i ever heard, and it was the one that got me hooked straight away, especially the unique delay Hannett put on the drums. It is also a shame that there is only a shitty quality demo of "Ceremony" & "In A Lonely Place" recorded as JD, although the New Order versions are two of their best tracks. Is this where i get everybody hurling abuse at me??????????????

no, not at all, everybody has been extremely nice on this site, but i know how personal, favorite tracks are, and that maybe there will be some strong disagreement at my suggestion!

There is an absolutely stonking version of Disorder on the 'Les Bains Douches' live CD.

I wonder how the Joy Division version of Ceremony would have sounded had it ever been properly developed and recorded, probably not that much different.

To get some abuse, I recommend saying that a) it's a Joy Division song or b) that you prefer the re-recorded version... :)

......Or, you'd have preferred it if Paul Young released a bad 80's style cover version of it.

Disorder is an absolute stormer of a track, excellent album opener and as OldBlue points out, it sounds awesome on the Les Bains CD. One of the very best from NO/JD IMHO. No abuse slinging here, Bill! CTB

Glad to hear i'm not alone with my appreciation of this track then. To be honest it is probably better that it DOESN'T get metioned too much otherwise it could end up on the soundtrack to shitty TV programmes like Hollyoaks, which was guilty of dragging Love Will Tear Us Apart through the mud! That track has become to JD what "the Ace of Spades" is to Motorhead, i.e. the only track that joe public thinks they did.

when i first heard unknown pleasures it was the one song that hit me right away.

They used to do it live with a really loud siren thing whooping away through the track. Like a coarser version of the sound you can hear on the Unknown Pleasures version. I think it was on tape and controlled from the desk. Anybody know when they stopped using this effect live? I reckon early-mid 79 - certainly I can't remember it much after UP came out. I don't even have a bootleg with the siren on, although I'm sure I've heard one or two (Bowden Vale, perhaps?). Anyway.......GREAT track!

Disorder is one of their finest tracks - the beat, bassline and lyrics are absolutely superb. "I got the spirit but lose the feeling" is one of my personal favorite pop music lines of all-time! One of the best opening tracks I've ever heard . Heart & Soul Disc Four also has a great live version.

i am glad to know i am not alone on this one then! It never seems to appear on JD compilations (other than Heart & Soul), which i always find strange, or maybe it is to keep it a bit more sacred? To be honest it sounds so good opening U Pleasures that it kind of needs to stay exactly where it is.

On another note, one of the best uses of Love will tear us apart is on the John Peel Farbric Live CD. If you haven't heard it, it is one compilation that is worth giving a go.

Disorder gave birth to Ceremony. The guitar riff on it is much like the opening bass riff to the latter. In my top three JD tracks.

Great track, i prefer the live version on Still (probably because thats where i first heard this song and fell in love with it)

Erics and Leigh both do, will check the Electric Ballroom tonight. Have a feeling it had gone by September, don't remember it on Futurama. We don't have Disorder from the Nashville August show so can't tell.

Incidentally, it seems the other set at Erics that night may have surfaced after all these years!

Interesting! I was at the Sheffield and Leeds gigs in July but I can't remember if they used it then - it's a long time ago! I was also at Futurama (terrible venue, awful sound!) in Sept and I know it wasn't used there as I have a recording as an aide-memoire!

It was used at the YMCA, Nashville Ballroom, Leigh and Electric Ballroom gigs in August and at Futurama in September - Futurama was the last one as it didn't reappear for the September Nashville gig...

The live version off 'Still' is my favorite JD track of all time. The guitar sound in the beginning is incredible.

I'm glad he ditched the "unitl the spirit..." lines and whent right for the "I got the spirit / lose the feeling!!" instead.

I just realised that the siren is on the Disorder version on Heart & Soul CD4 from July 79's Russell Club gig.

I reckon the version of Interzone immediately after it is the best I've heard, fwiw.
