Hi,

I've been searching allover the net, in order to find some information about the version of Blue Monday, "New Order" is playing/practicing in '24 hour party people'. I was wondering if this version of Blue Monday actually exists - if so, has it been released on cds, vinyl or? :)

Best regards, Sylvester

It exists only in the form shown in the movie, it was recorded by the actors themselves.

not only that, but it's a safe bet nothing anything like it was ever recorded. BM was conceived as a fully automated pice, to get them out of doing encores, so an accoustic version would be a tad silly.

Flash forward from 1983 to 2005, and that's exactly what we have. 'sing over the 12" single' Just once, I'd LOVE to see a NO show without he song at all, or at least not in its place at the very end of the show. Seems to be a cue for the hardcore fans to head for the bar.

no, what we have now is what u said, a record with some karaoke. the automatic piece would have been performed live by silicon musicians :)

They did it at Glastonbury if I remember well?

I'm not sure it's that festival, but at one this year, probably due to Digital Mike threats.

I personally think they should open with it.

If Community 2 gets off the ground one of our lot may like to record a semi-acoustic version. After all, BLT has appeared in acoustic and semi-acoustic forms with and without involvement from NO members.

however......sometimes it turns nasty if they don't play it.....just as at barrowlands in 2001.

Bah, there are like eight acoustic covers of BLT. If I find out there has been another since then, I'll die, I'll just die. :banghead:

I Really like the BLT version with Doves...

I'll try to copy it at my next Karaoke Beer Fest with some people at work. After a few pints...I'll get it right...

there is no original New Order semi acoustic version of Blue Monday. BM was written in the manner of "what does this button do". It's original purpose was to enable the band to have a break, or to nick of the stage at the end of a gig with the music still going. Legend has it that the original vocoder vocals especially recorded for this purpose were accidentally wiped. Hence Barney had to sing it live. If Barney was singing then Hooky wanted to play live bass etc.

isn't the movie acoustic version extremely unlikely no matter how you look at it... Barney never wrote songs like that (the process of writing i mean) or practiced them that way especially in 1983.... or was the behind the scenes that different?

indeed upto True Faith the music usually was finished way before the lyrics.

That's very cose to how I've heard it, tho I heard that the main reason they gave up on the "automatic song" approach because (as we can all hear) their equipment was flakey enough even with Steve Gillian and Bernard standing over them, never mind left to their own devices. I've not heard about the vocoder before...I know that the vocoder IS on the original 24track reel, but that's not to say that there wasn't more of it BEFORE they recorded....perhaps it was all laid out accross a few emulator discs (if they were planning to play it on auto, the vocals would need triggering, so they;d need to be in a sampler) and one of them got mangled.

I've also heard 2 versions of the story of the drums..... Apparently the main riff on BM, is meant to be more like the one on The Beach...with the rolling semiquaver bassdrums fading down and up. But depending on the version you hear.....either every time Steve convinced the DMX to do it right, it crashed andlocked solid before they could save it OR, once it was finally right, Barney or hooky accidentally kicked the plug out of the wall. I never used a DMX so I dunno how mental it was, but I've HAD something simillar to version 2 happen to me. Three weeks work on a live set, formatting the disc to save it a few hours before the gig....and just as last disc is formatting, Rich's bro comes in and says "I need a 4-way" and grabbed the one that ALL our gear was chained off outta the way. I thought it was hilarious, and was willing to go do a jam instead...but Rich almost blacked out, he said it felt like he'd taken 500 mushrooms....and it became the only gig we pulled out of.

I think the vocoder vocals would sound very similar to what's on The Beach. If that's the case, then perhaps it wasn't wiped afterall.

That's what I meant about them maybe losing one or two discs from the set they had all the vocoded vocals on. And yes, the vocoded vox on the beach are what's left (well they're also mixed behind barnster on BM proper as well).

But as I say it was the flakey gear that knocked it on the head......they used to use 3 identical keyboard rigs on the assumption tat 2 would break down....and all 3 usually would. Oddly, although I've heard hooky say this, I can't ever recall seeing 3 identical rigs on their stage, unless some was offstage or, he meant triple redundancy on the voyetri and sequencers rather than the keyboards[1].

One thing I've nevr worked out, is what BM's keyboards were played with live (BEFORE they started miming it). It could be a standalone sequencer, or it could be one of the Emulators...they don;t have much in the way of sequencers, but t's definitely one of them playing WAS on PFD, cos you can SEE Gills hit the go button on it's panel[2]. Whatever it is, it had a fair degree of interactivity, handy thing when your singer doesn;t know any of the songs :)

[1] Don't point out that one of their voyetri was a keyboard one please. [2] Working on the principle that you don;t use a dummy button to send a midi command to a sequecner, when the sequencer's within gerfingerpoken range anyway.
