well listening to a local radio station whilst at work today,the dj was playing jits from the 80s,90s,00s ect as they do and what should pop up as the decades question????

Q which song from the album "power corruption and lies" went on to be one of the longest charting and biggest selling 12" records of all time,name that band and that song.

eventually mike from fleetwood gets on (and at this point i thought well it cant be digimike as they dont have a tescos in fleetwood, its actually in thornton clevelys.)

the dj then confirms that not only did the song come from pcl,and it was the biggest selling 12" of all time but ALSO it was one of the longest charting 7" singles of all time.

so there you have it we was ALL FOOKING WRONG there was a 7" blue monday and slap me with a kipper and call me ethel but there are copies of pcl floating about with blue monday on em.

'Blue Monday' and 'The Beach' both appeared on US copies of PCL, as did the name of the band (apparently, because the 'average joe') wouldn't buy an album if it didn't have the band's name on it). Other foreign releases sported stickers with the name of the band on them.

The original Blue Monday - Fac73 was ONLY released as a 12" (apart from DJ copies and foreign promos).

That's one of the reasons that it will always be the biggest selling 12" of all time - it was only (the original, not the re-releases) available on 12" single.

The original 12" released in 1983 was still in the UK 'Indie' charts when I was working in a record shop in 1985 - it hadn't left the charts even for a week - not sure about the main or 'proper' charts though.

The DJ/Radio Station/researchers were talking complete crap, but if I'd been the listener who phoned in, I'd have given the same answer, knowing what these idiots are like...

I bought PC&L on one of those Factory cassettes in the white "library boxes",when it came out.That had BM and The Beach on it.Tape lasted all of two minutes.Thank fook for CD!

Ahhh the joys of overlength cassestte. I have some Japanese import stuff on Warp records and it actually has a warniing that basically says "this is a double play tape, it'll work right on superior, up to date japanese technology, if you do not have this, good luck, you round eyed twat!". It's cos they gotta use thinner tape (which is a lot more likely to get stuck round the capstan and pinch mechanism), though that's usually only when u need 2 hours or more, not when ur bunging 2 tracks onto PCL.

As I heard it, BM never left the top200 between 83 and the 88 mix.

has anyone ever heard any of the foreign promos? I believe some of them contain a truncated version not unlike the shorter live version played on TOTP and at a few gigs in 83/84, but that others had both sides in full. I can't imagine that BM would sound very good ( fuck up NOW Mike!! :) ) pressed into 7" of recycled country records....in soviet era Poland.
