What's the story on Hooky's "Player in the League thing", as you put it? I have it, it's neat, and I have no idea what it's actually called or what CD it appeared on.

Thieves Like Us and Best and Marsh are great pieces, but Elegia got my vote! I love it.

Well, on the disc and track listings it says 'Thieves Like Us Instrumental' I'm willing to ignore the 'come in' because it's so bloody wonderful! :D

Daver has the right idea - I think some of you think I'm talking about Player in the League that was the b-side to... Here to Stay? I have no idea where this other track came from, one of the posters on here emailed me an mp3, but its got great Hooky bass all over it.

let's go. i prefer the original with vocals, but the instrumental is fantastic, as well.

I chose Don't Do it. It was a hard decision, because i like most of the tunes. Elegia was a close second.

I didn't vote because my choices weren't in the poll; they are the instrumental version of "Confusion" and "Vicious Circle".

Sorry I missed out Viscious Circle and Sputnik, forgot all about them. I considered Confusion but couldn't remember if the version on disc 2 of Substance was an instrumental or not. I considered checking my copy but decided I couldnt give a shite. :)

I'll have to vote don't do it, it's just fatasticly weird.

My problem with some of the suggestions is that they are instrumental versions of tunes that had a vocal i.e. TLU, which shouldn't count cos then there would be countless mixes which should also be in.

mind you I wouldn't complain if any of them came on TV or radio when I wasn't expecting it, they are all excellent, and one you've missed from the technique era is MTO, which has a vocal sample but should be classed as a true instrumental, and again is excellent.

I wish they'd do some more.

Had to go for Elegia. Its just such a moving, mornful, sombre piece of music and one of the best tunes No has ever come up with. It fits Low-life brilliantly and I never tire of it. I love the way it flows and ebbs, the melodies, the crashing symbals, and then the distorted guitar riff climaxing it. Brilliant stuff.

However, the 17 minute version of is is pretty rubbish. This is the only NO song that I like in edited format. Cuts all the crappy out of tune guitar bits.

Dont Do It, is a very close 2nd for me.

Avalanche gets my vote as well. (But no one else mentioned Video 5 8 6 - too experimental perhaps?)

Those tribal like drums at the beginning of Avalanche, the sweeping strings, the melancholic melody, a perfect ending to an otherwise bland record. Sad, yet hopeful. With the band coming close to breaking up during/after that record and tour, it would have made for a bittersweet, yet fitting swan song.

Liked it when it was played during the New Order story as the camera glances over the Hacienda.

That weak sounding drum beat intro with the harpischord (or whatever) sound playing suddenly overpowered by those banging drums and orchestral hits is ACE! Then at 1:11 comes the guitar and bass plucking along to the drums. Then at 1:44 comes in those wierd samples that make you say "what the f*ck?!" Pure genius. Simple tune made simply awesome.

That's why I voted for DDI.

The Confused Instrumental is my favourite New Order track, Ruined In A Day probably being my favourite song.

The performance in this track is superb. Oozes with creativity. It’s a pity we don’t hear more of it today (in general).

I could argue that Dont Do It and Ecstasy arent instrumentals as both have vocals on them.

Don't Do It is incredible. It's a darn near perfect cut!

Let's go - no contest For second place I'd be hard pushed to choose between Best & Marsh and Don't do it. And Vicious Circle is great as well.

Ecstacy closely followed by Murder. The former is one of their most off-the-wall and intriguing songs which is criminally under-rated.

The final weird sample, as was pointed out in a previous thread, is "your mother sucks cocks in hell" backwards, that alone should make it top NO tune EVER.

When that first tinkering melody comes in and then the high hats...and then that first snare on 'MTO' comes in, it's a winner to me. The main melody is TOTAL New Order circa-1989. Then I mix the short version into the (Minus Mix) and then I go into something else, like E-Zee Possee 'Everything Starts With An 'E'.

Yeah, there are club records from '89 [like the world-famous 'Sueno Latino' (Winter Version) or 'Pacific' (909)] that are BETTER...yes, better than 'MTO' - but 'MTO' tells about a side of New Order I just wish the band had explored more into the early-90s - and they didn't.

Wow! I'd love to hear THAT mix! Always preferred the short mix of MTO to the club mix,and E-ZEE POSSE always takes me back to when I started DJ-ing in 1990.

Dude, even though I am only 27, I am a whore for the old-school. I come from Jacksonville, Florida USA which isn't exactly a cosmopolitan city.

When I was in my teens, scooping up all these weird UK house & techno 12"s made me feel like I was in another world, that there were people 5000 miles away who were on the same vibe as me. That kind of thinking always made me believe New Order was just one album away from being the Rolling Stones.

Even when dance music exploded in the US around 1997-1999, I thought club culture was gonna bring artists like Underworld and Sasha to the Billboard Top 10. Of course, it didn't, and now, in 2005, people are raving about gay-ass 70s rip-off bands like The Killers and Franz Ferdinand and I'm back where I was in 1991: listening to weird UK progressive house and trance 12"s.

avalanche by a mile for me, i just love how the rythym of the song just keeps hinting at bursting over and changing tempo but never does.

holy crap MTO. its like we share the same brain. even tho new order has always been like religion to me, i started to dwelve in UK dance music as soon as i heard faithless' "insomnia". changed everything. then discovered underworld, re-discovered moby, started to hate bt. got exposed to all the various dj's and production outfits, then i would scour the virgin megastore in vancouver for the overpriced import cd and vinyl singles for that matt darey or ferry corsten mix. it all came down to digweed/sasha, van dyk and james holden, sprinkled with some trance cheese here and there. but if it wasnt for new order, none of these heads would have rolled. the first thing i said when i met paul van dyk and bt, was thank god for new order, eh? they both agreed. paul did the remix for spooky and bt's track 'nectar' from 'escm' is a blatant tribute to new order.

Video 586 edit, then Avalanche, then Saville.

Sorry if I'm being a complete muppet, but I've just looked at the song browser and there are no excerpts of salvation - hence can't listen to Skullcrasher, Let's Go (instrumental - I have the orig from 1963). I also didn't buy the singles for Fine Time and Run2 so don't have MTO and Don't Do It.

If anyone can see their way to help me out with these requests I'll be eternally grateful!

That's funny what you say about BT, because ever since 'Ima', I thought "This guy is too grandiose, too over the top." and I never cared for his flamoyant style. When it rubbed off on Sasha's '96 single 'Be As One', I was starting to worry (didn't that song date horribly?). I think BT's best cut is 'Godspeed' but even I don't own that 12". The only thing of his I'll play is his Mike Oldfield remixes of 'Let There Be Light' done in 1995. Those, I like.

Van Dyk is great. His label is great and I like his new single 'The Other Side'.

Best & Marsh it has to be. Back in 88/89 NO were popping up on all kinds of soundtracks inc an instrumental version of 'Vanishing Point' (available on 'Round & Round' cd) which was the theme tune to 'Making Out' and was fooking brilliant.

For those who never saw MO, it starred Keith Allen as a factory owner who went mental and dressed as a giant chicken , Margi Clarke as Margi Clarke, and another woman (who almost married Fred Elliot in Corrie a few years back) who married a ManU player in the show. The show was fookin cool, completely mental, and brilliantly written.

Pretty much sums up NO at the time.

Not heard the full version, but the edit version on one of the 'Cool as Ice' discs is excellent- I've even got my 6 year old and my mate's 8 year old bopping their heads to it!
