Making a "Singles" CD-R with all correct versions — Forum Archive

Hi all, I'm trying to put together a CD-R with all of the correct single versions/edits/mixes. After listening to singles two or three times, I've concluded:

The version of Confusion appears to be the same as the video version
The version of 1963 appears to be the same one as the version from the UK 1994 Best of (1963 94) inspite of what the credits say
Of course Run2 is incorrect, but the correct version may be burned from the Collection DVD
Which version of Spooky is considered to be the official single, the Fluke video version or the album edit? Any input would be appreciated! Danimal

I'd stick with the Radio Edit version of Spooky, it didn't technically feature on either UK CD single but was the lead track on the US Maxi-CD at the time in '93. It's on a UK promo CD too if I remember and is the closest to a 7" New Order version you're going to get. The Minimix (Fluke) is a completely new mix a.k.a. Video mix.

You've remembered Run 2 from the DVD, good... actually The Perfect Kiss is also incorrect on Singles as it's just the bog standard Low-life version. There are two versions of the original Perfect Kiss 7"; the UK edit and the Benelux edit. For arguments sake I went with the UK edit as we're dealing with a UK band. Working from a UK 7" MP3 I ripped Wave copies of Perfect Kiss & Kiss Of Death from Substance and edited them down in Cool Edit 2000. I pasted across the section from Kiss Of Death to complete it and bingo, a CD quality version of the UK 7". After a bit of normalising it sounds indistinguishable from the MP3 (minus any pops/crackles).

The only other two I can think of is True Faith (replace the 5:54 album version with the 4:15 Album Edit from the US Promo CD or the 4:07 Shep Pettibone 'Seven inch' from the TF CDV) and Regret (replace the 4:07 album version with the 3:50 Radio edit from the rare as fcuk NOSAMP1 CD Promo).

All of that would make your new CDR definitive methinks.

BTW, does anyone happen to know where the single version of Bizarre Love Triangle is available on CD? The US CD single indicates that it contains the album version and not the proper single version. Danimal

Your first question should be if you are going to use 12# or 7# mixes.

the us cd single as far as is not the album version, but as far as i can tell it does differ from the original 7# which i do have and on cdr.

I have the US cd single of BLT and it's the Shep Pettibone 7" mix on it. Which I think is probably the best single version. I also like the pettibone mix used in the video of BLT, it retains the beginning from his extended mix but then switches over to the edited version.

I think someone said that 1963 on singles is the same as 1963-94 Hague mix and that is not the case, i hated the 94 version because it edited and cut out part of the lyrics from the original, but the new singles version has the full correct lyrics, and as far as i can tell it's never been released before.

To be honest I've found the best Single version of BLT is Hauge's "Married To The Mob" soundtrack mix which appeared minus a vocal on (the best of). It's got everything you'd want from BLT and still manages to sound modern. I reckon the band's + Pettibone's versions have dated pretty badly.

I noticed the 1963 versions too, I compared the two when I got Singles and the '94 version is definitely shorter as you say. Oh, and is it just me or does Arthur Baker's '95 remix have absolutely no bass to it whatsoever? It seems to be tinny as fcuk on the Nineteen63 CD singles and the Best ofs.

Here's what you'll need to replace the non-single versions on Singles:

Confusion 7" edit -- rip it from the video.

Blue Monday 7" -- wasn't released in the UK, so don't worry about it.

The Perfect Kiss 7" -- I'm not sure whether the UK 7" and the version on Singles (and Best Of and Low-life) are the same or not; Benelux had a different 7" edit.

BLT 7" -- on the U.S. CD single

True Faith 7" -- kinda tricky. The video has an edit but I don't think it's the same edit as the UK 7". The U.S. promo CD single has it, I think, as well as the Morning Sun Remix Edit that was the 7" mix in the U.S.

1963 1995 Arthur Baker radio edit -- on the first UK CD single or the U.S. Best Of.

Round and Round 7" -- I haven't bothered to listen for the tiny differences that would confirm whether Singles has the original 1989 7" mix or the 1994 cleaned up version. (There are differences in the chorus overdubbing, iirc.)

Run 2 7" -- rip from the video.

Regret 7" -- slightly edited from the album version; don't have it myself, but it's on various radio promos.

Spooky edit -- as mentioned in an earlier post, technically the Minimix seems to be the UK radio version.

Quite possibly Turn won't be released as a single, so a pure singles collection might not include it. Also, Procession / EGG isn't really a double a-side, I don't think, so only one should be on the set -- Procession, if my recollections of the matrix numbers are correct.

Fun facts apropos of nothing: the 1963 video mix is not quite the same as the Arthur Baker radio mix; the former is a little longer. And the video version of "World in Motion" is several seconds shorter than the 7" mix.
