If Bernard is determined to categorise us as such - we ought to see where we all stand. Consider what you are at heart, or what you were when you fell for NO. Thus we will all be categorised and B should be happy. It will be interesting to see where people lie on this one.

I guess you meant UK fans...
Obviously, the proportion of football holligan in North America would be pretty low.. as we don't care much for that sport ;)
Choose your sport! Depending on country. Sport hooligans, shall we say. If you're a spotty hooligan I'm afraid we dont cater for you.
I'm your spotty student right here!
Scattermcbrain will attest, if she gets around to reading this.
Nice Mike, nice.
i reckon most of the vikings I met in Manc were both actually. In conversation in the pub they were witty and educated people. Couple of hours later with NO on the stage it was like being on the terraces pre-riot with all the Nu-ODDAH ing and heckling. Actually the only main difference between NO gigs and footy/rugger(that's american footbal for men)/whatever, is that at gigs it's your "home team" that take all the abuse.
How come Spotty Students always win this poll but I've yet to run into one of you at any New Order related outing! ![]()
I had a feeling the DVD re-release of NewOrderStory would bring this one up again. Pointless.

I'm afraid to say that I am a spotty student. I'd love to be a hooligan, but its always going to be an aspiration.

We're too spotty for that.
Being on the wrong side of the Atlantic doesn't help, either. :p
why's there no option for alcoholic party animal, just about sums me up. now i just need my wifes permission to prove that![]()
Pardon me - I never saw a poll like this one before - must have been before my time - therefore its before others aswell. It'll show us where newies like me stand - the new NO generation. That'd be interesting, wouldn't it?

That's fair enough if you never saw the original poll but no, it wouldn't really be interesting. How do you mean 'where newies stand'? Do you really want to be so mundanely categorised?!?
Just because Bernard quipped in some off the cuff, pisstake way he considers NO's fanbase to be made up of either football hooligans or spotty students (Hint: he was laughing when he said it) I don't see why it should be taken so seriously let alone be made into a poll. I would bet hard cash he was taking the piss and those fan 'categories' have since been blown out of all proportion by a number of fans who perhaps don't get Barney's sense of humour. When I first heard the interview I laughed and didn't give it a second thought because I'm personally neither, as are many other fans. I mean he was in the barber's getting his hair cut whilst being interviewed by Paul 'twat' Morley! It was an on-the-spot bullshit response to a lazy journalist question.
Classifying fan backgrounds and putting their status into little boxes is just beyond pointless to me... unless you're from a record label and getting paid for market research ![]()

Mil may have missed the origin of the similar thread to this one because it originally came up on the Behind Closed Doors forum and not this one. Admittedly though, I think Bernard WAS taking the piss as well
I stand on the terraces at every away match my team plays. I am also a chess grandmaster, so i don't think I can be pigeon-holed.

I used to be a student. I used to be spotty. I used to be what most would describe as a 'hooligan'. Now I'm a responsible public service worker.
I agree with Alistair that it was a silly off the cuff response to a lazy question, but I still think it's amusing to see how fans see themselves in an either/or way.
There have been far sillier polls here...

Yikes - I didn't mean for everyone to take this so seroiusly. Also not trying to shove people into little boxes. I aggree that Bernard was taking the piss when he made this comment. Just thought a light hearted poll might be amusing - if you dont agree thats completley fine - can't you just ignore the thread? Heck, lets not rip into everyone if you disagree with the amusement level of a poll. There have been far sillier ones than this.
Sheez, some people have happily voted and the negativity is just bringing this down. Forget it - i'll be careful not to make any jokes in future unless I've cleared their amusement level with the majority.

don't worry we have humour. just check out behind closed doors. however anything to with the band can be deadly serious. however we reagulary take the piss out of them as well. ignore the negative sentiment. its just that we did this a few months back and you didn't know, not your fault. i guess im a former student and if you check my name on google you will find that i am an internationaly known german soccer hooligan.

Don't take it personal Mil...
People are quite sensitive about fan divisions.

Yes, I did too, and I'm still sorry... at least it stands as a record of how people like me can get overexcited with the wrong end of the stick!

far out that even looks a bit like me. I'd never pose like that though, and the tie has to go.
What about girlies?
I'm not spotty or a footy hooligan (but i must admit Green Streets was like porn to me!)

You are therefore a unique and fascinating NO fan; just like the rest of us!

I think I probably should've put a few smileys in my reply
I apologise if you were offended by my comments mil, they weren't aimed at you personally but rather the misconception a few New Order fans have about that "fan" comment Barney made in NOS. I've seen the Hooligans vs. Students thread too many times now and it just irks me (probably more than it should) that some fans take whatever Barney says as gospel.
As you said you were just putting up a lighthearted poll but to be fair you did start the poll by saying "if Bernard is determined to classify us" etc. so at the time it looked serious. I understand now you meant it as a light-hearted question :) but we're all entitled to comment on whatever polls/threads on NOOL and I've never subscribed to "if you have nothing nice to say don't say anything at all".
Anyhow, to answer your poll I am an ex-Student (with clear pores thankfully) who is not into football :D so Neither once again.
Glad we sorted that Alastair.
What I like about this board is that arguments can start. I welcome that completley. I was on a board once that I got banned from because I wrote a word all in caps. They told me this was shouting and shouting was not allowed on the board. I queried this and was told that I apparentley had a history of poor spelling and typos. Well, pardon me for not whipping out the dictionary during a leisurely post.
Long live NOOL.
By the way miss jem - I'm a girl - but I'm also a student (well - sort of. inbetween actual school and uni). I guess you're neither. Special! Representitve of the diverse range NO caters for!

I sort of knew about JD in 1980 with LWTUA vid played on Countdown(Aussie pop/rock show circa '70s/80s on gov-run ABCTV). Ian "MOLLY" Meldrum, the talking-head of the show said shortly after the vid was shown that JD were "splitting up" which I suppose was decided by ABC execs as more sensitive to say on a teen-oriented prog such as Countdown as opposed to saying JD's future was up in the air after the lead singer topped himself. I rediscovered JD(in a roundabout way) after a shortened version of BM was played on the same show in 1983. Later that year I became involved through high school work experience in a uni-based community broadcaster called 2XX. There, while looking through thier record library, I came across the 12" green sleeve Aussie release of Ceremony. I gave it a spin on a turntable in a disused spare studio and was very surprised how different it was to BM. Read the credits; written by Joy Division. How generous I thought, giving one of thier songs to another band to record. Eventually got to know more NO fans that worked there and discovered the real link between the two. Loved both forms of the band non-stop since.

I'll tell you a secret, i used to be a student. Don't tell anybody!
I seem to recall a particular gig at Preston Guildhall where certain individuals of a hooligan persuasion (football or otherwise) were fighting with students (or were they just spotty or goths?). Not sure who won but I'm sure Hooky interjected at some point. On one visit to the loo I distinctly remember someone saying to a large number of similarly attired people that 'this place is full of fukin students'. ![]()
Erm... Skinhead (the Aitch is silent oh well spoken types) when I first heard them then scally type in my mid teens to druggy clubber in my twenties to real ale drinking couch potato in my thirties. Barney mentioned that type of fan in an interview none of you have ever read, honest. Where's my box then?
