Grade 8 piano and don't regret it at all and have always found my theory training very helpful in making my own music.

I think guitar teachers are far worse than classical teachers. They seem obsessed with chords and scales and the like and not so on feel.

The first thing I was really taught on piano was melody...which is new order. Whereas on guitar you are taught chords.

Plus speed seems to count a lot for the speed merchant guitar players whereas the most important thing in piano is feel. You could play a technically perfect piece in piano and still fail a grade if you played it like a robot.

That being said, I'm speaking from observation as I have never had and never will have a guitar or bass lesson. been playing both for a long time, still don't use chords and still feel like an idiot when I have to explain to band members about what I've played/written as I don't know all the technical lingo.

EDIT: actually on re-reading that you seem to have deftly ignored loads of the mor annoying things. And you have no fucking idea just how right you are about FUCKING guitarists and their chordal obsessions....Jazzers are insane. They set me a lead sheet down, and I got "uhuh, bit of A for that long then itt's C minor for a bit then an E...fair play", start playing root notes and once I get a groove going start throwing in the notes that belong to the chord/key/mode whatever......meanwhile, all around me..... "see over that first C, what are you playing, is a an add 13 flat 9, or is it the F dominant flat 5 flat 11" (ching screech) "I dunno man $DUDE shoed me how to play a G noddlarian modal pentatonic frugghatch inversion over a c major" and so it goes on. and if at any point I mention anything like...."that sounds not a great deal like the tune we're meant to be playing anymore" or "that's a pile of cock, sort yourselves out"...I get a fucking lecture on being a retard. They'd have grounds for it were it not for the fact I leared most of the same shit as them (tho not in guitar class obviously, I'd rather have had my hands chopped off), yet somehow the most it meant to me was something to reach for when stuck...and as for all that sustitution shit, they keep wanking over it, and giving me loads of "you should be able to fire all this off campbell"....and none of them ever stops to think that 1. all that crap basically means, on the bass, not hitting the rot note but some other, really, that's all it comes down to. or 2. if I start playing like a cunt it really will be jazz, 3 guys (we're up to date on this post soryy, this is my little tuesday night distraction project a jazzy 3 piece) playing 3 fookin tunes.

AND I can't ven hooky-out when I want cos there's so many Fucking Chords that you would actuallu HAVE to know all the bollox not to lpay bummers ARGGGGH. Still the whole excercise amuses me when I just play any note that's under my finger, with perfect time and posistioning (you have to put at least half your brain out of gear to do it)...just hitting notes here there and everywhere in a steady walking groove......and they say " fuckin right man thought you said you couldn't do walkin basslines"

I spent a decade in Orchestra classes because it was the only way I could get the parents to pay for a violin for me. I already had this Yamaha synth they had thought was a keyboard (which was my luck, I do admit), and in exchange for a violin, I was told there had to be lessons that followed.

I didn't want lessons because I wasn't obsessed with key signatures or the circle of fifths. I just wanted a violin so I could play stuff like New Order as viciously as possible on a classical device.

I rarely use the instrument as intended. More often than not it has found its way into more rock arrangements between groups I've played with, and gets tuned out of key and modified to produce more interesting sounds. I refuse to read notes off a page, because it's far more creative to just bang around with the notes and find melodies and bridges I've had sitting around in my head for ages. With all luck, I've only worked with people so far who operate on that same code of conduct. :P

My director always said I'd never do anything with "that pop music" I kept noddling with in the practice rooms. I admit to not being famous, but there's nothing like seeing someone's face light up during an otherwise boring school concert when they hear the opening strains of BLT grinding away.

I'm all for Jack printing this out and showing it to his teacher, but really I don't want the lad to get a week's worth of detention for being a smart one. ;)

I'm lucky in that despite a pretty strict classical training I can ignore it all when it comes to playing guitar and bass. I just play the notes...whatever they may be and that be that.

And sadly, the majority of classical sods are very snobby to pop music and vice versa. Which I think is a bit as there is good and bad in both...just got to get past the evangalists in all fields of music to make your own mind up.

Personally, I think though the reason I have my new order obsession, and I know I don't post here but those who know me know I have that obsession, is, because I see new order's music as very clsoe to classical music.

Bizarre I know, but the best classical music has simple melodies that intertwine, and so do new order

I read a description of True Faith once as being "just like blue Monday, the perfect New Order song, a symphony you can dance to" Perfect.

Don;t think anyone objects to classical music, it rocks (tho much of it is so fookin nice it kills me), it's the learning of the instruments that can damage the music that;s already inside the player. That's bout it aint it people?

And yes I suspect Jack would get expelled these days just for being right. Stab a teacher, get lines...proves she's a moron, you're a subversive and yer on yer arse :D

Hooky is amazing. He has written my favorite bassline ever in my favorite song ever by my favorite band ever where on top of all that, he sings. Further more, of all the songs I've covered, that song (Doubts Even Here) is getting the most votes, almost doubling the runner-up.

I agree 100%. Hooky is the man. I can't get better than that Logan, but if I had to pick the most important element in New Order sound, I would pick Hooky's bass. IMHO he makes New Order New Order, the band that makes the best music I've ever listened to in my life.

I somewhat agree with you. But then again I consider the song World (The Price Of Love) as much a New Order song as, say, the bass-driven Age Of Consent. And World really doesn't even have Hooky's bass in it. But I do agree that without Hooky, it would lack. But then again, without Steve's drumming or Barney just being Barney, it would lack as well. Otherwise bands like Monaco or Revenge would be just as good as New Order, wouldn't they? Not to say that they're bad, but the whole of New Order just work together so well. I wouldn't replace one of em. (Even though Gillian was replaced, but whatever)
