Rolling Stones Top 100 Songs

I bought this months Australian edition of Rolling Stone today after noticing that there was a 'top 100 pop songs of all time' listing ... I've just read through it and found that there are no New Order songs ... Whats the go with that ? Wait till you hear of some of the songs that made the top 100 .... Silverchair - Tomorrow (came in at number 16) Britney Spears - Baby One More Time (number 40) TLC - No Scrubs (number 41) Kylie Minogue - Spinning Around (number 49) Eminem - My Name Is (number 58)

Love Will Tear Us Apart did make it into number 65 though ... What about Perfect Kiss, Bizzare Love Triangle, and even Blue Monday (considering its popularity) ... ?

RS Australia is just that: RS*

Despite their supposed commitment to a change in direction, it remains a tired, antiquated, rock digest. Their review of Get Ready was typically uninspiring.. I haven't yet read their interview with NewOrder in the current issue, but I doubt it's in any way revelatory. They are good if your idea of a music mag is an in-depth interview with bloody Jennifer Aniston.

Any poll conducted by them will be weighted heavily towards rock dinosaurs and latest fads.

Don't believe the hype.

Australian RS is the same as American RS, correct (in other words, a greatest pop songs list would be in the currant RS if I were to buy it or even open the thing)?

LWTUA at 65 is a little lower than I would've placed it (no, I'm not doing "Taboo #7's all time fave 100 pop songs" to show where I'd place it, that's just too much), but Britney before JD? No way in hell, RS is fucking Tiger Beat with 1-900 numbers.

I contributed a couple of three-to-four paragraphs to that New Order fanzine that someone posted about a while back, but I don't want to turn into the next Greil Marcus. I got his book Lipstick Traces because I thought it'd be interesting. Boy was I wrong!

Spin's okay, Alternative Press is slightly better, RS sucks, but Tiger Beat has really been making a comeback with their "Pop Stars exposed!" new articles. I would have never known Britney and that dude from Nsuck were going out if I hadn't read the hard-hitting interview in TB.

These sort of polls are always generally shite but No Scrubs by TLC is a quality tune.

True they go safe older groups (ie. beatles, pink floyd) or the latest fads. That is the general prob with music mags, try to hard to look cool.

I like Q magazine though, even though they seem to be strategic with their lists, always representing every era, every genre etc.

But their articles generally are good.

It's a little different Tabsy my man.

The Oz version does it's own articles, polls, etc but draws a lot of material from the US version. I doubt a completely crap song like Tomorrow would've cracked a Top 20 in the US edition- surely it was sorry Oz patriotism that blew it up to such ridiculous heights.

But you can bet your bottom dollar that the US Poll would have been filled with crud of a similar nature.

England's Dreaming is a lot better at explaining the whole Punk explosion, it really captures the moment best. John Lydon's autobiography should be required reading when the whole class struggle issue comes up in History classes. Otherwise, there's very few books that capture the impact of Punk and don't try to minimize it. Lipstick Traces may have some relevant passages, but going on and on about obscure art movements that had no impact is a bit pretentious.

Regarding the Australian list, I just noticed at the front of the magazine it says the list was originally made by the American Rolling Stone and the Australian Rolling Stone fiddled with it a tiny bit throwing in afew Australian acts like Ratcat, Silverchair etc ...

I ran across a copy of RS at the local newstand today, made no mention of a "Greatest Pop Songs" but it did have Pearl Jam...oops, I meant Creed, on the cover. So I of course spent almost no time trying to read the thing.....

I picked up Lydon's book (No Blacks, No Irish, No Dogs) at a local bookstore almost exactly a year ago. It was in the "alternative lifestyles" section, so i had an excuse to skim thru the "lesbian erotica". I finished Lydon's book in a week, re-read it two or three times. Essential reading

Ratcat in the Australian RS?

There is patriotism, and there is lunacy. Sure Ratcat had some decent songs, but hey so did The Farm and I dont see them cracking british top 100 lists.

Us Aussies have a sad inferiority complex me thinks, well not me personally I know most of our music and entertainment is crap, even if you Brits have this pervese fascionation with our dramas.

And Creed? Fecking Creed, I categorically hate them, that would be like Motley Crew cracking a top 10 list.
