New on this site, and I have a question: Can the extended version of "The Perfect Kiss" (8:46, the version found on the Substance cassette) be found on any audio CD recording (and excluding any live or video version)?

I have Substance on CD, and The Perfect Kiss on there lasts 8:02.

Yeah, the version on the Substance cassette is also the 8:02 edited version. On the Substance vinyl, original 12", and also a bonus track on the Low-life tape you can find the 8:46 version, but it's tragically never been available on CD.

Amazing to think that production-wise, this was New Order at their experimental peak, and the full-length 12" is a masterpiece, yet has never featured on any of the numerous CD collections we've seen released over the years!

Hmmm. That's funny. My cassette version of Substance had the full 8:46 of The Perfect Kiss (Canada, Polygram 1987).

What's the difference between the 8:46 and the 8:02 versions?? Is the 8:46 version the same but slightly longer or is it a different mix altogether?

The 8:46 is the full version of TPK. the 8:02 is the Substance circumsized edit of the song. It was chopped up in order for it to fit the standard 79:59 timing of a cd. Same song 'essentially', but if you have heard the full version, the conclusion of the song (when all hell breaks loose after the denouement) should have 3 "instrumental choruses", whereas on Substance you have only 2, knocking out the middle part of the trilogy. It's not a 'bad' edit per se, but they should have knocked out some time from Shellshock or State of the Nation

I so want the 8:46 version of TPK. I always say that the longer a NO song is, the better. Slash that, the best.

The 12" version of Shellshock was edited for inclusion on Substance as well.

I'm sure if you look hard enough on Soulseek you'll be able to find a passable vinyl conversion.
