Who in here rates/hates the Beatles?

Don't you just hate the music polls, everything (well almost)seems to be won by the Beatles best album, best single, influence etc, etc

Does their music really have anything to say these days. I think not. What d'ya think?

Shall we condemn them to Room 101 (in other words - Trash)?

Well I like the Beatles - but then again I did play George Harrison in a Beatles tribute band !

it always seems like the beatles get the top 4 out of 5 best albums, but what i really cant understand is nirvana always getting number 5?

The Beatles changed the dynamic from one handsome poster boy managed by a mildly homosexual manager to a group of handsome young poster boys with a mildly homosexual manager. But they wrote their own material, and took it to the top of the charts many times over. Before their visit in '64, no British act had made a major dent in the American media, they opened up the American market to British records. Keep that in mind before you start slagging them off, you might have never heard of NO without the Beatles first.

Having said that, I do think it's pussy-footing to keep naming Sgt. Pepper as the greatest album ever (At least VH1 spiced it up by naming Revolver instead). It's a cop-out that denys the importance of other artists. I got into Rock because of the Beatles, but that doesn't mean I believe they're the beginning and end of it all. I would argue that the Sex Pistols had as equal an impact, if not more. The Beatles are great, they are the most important band of all time, but they put out some crap as well, they were human beings with problems and egos and all that things that make us human. That got lost somewhere in the mythification of John, Paul, George and Ringo.

As fer The Beatles - cheesy bastards up till 66(which of course I like ) then they beacame quite good! Not a massive Beatles fan (prefer Lennon's solo stuff) but you'd have to say - they did totally change the face of Pop Music Give me Dylan any day though;)

Shugzie, you were going so well until that Dylan comment I Rate the Beatles stuff fairly high - it was pretty much the only music I knew prior to JD/NO, so it's part of my upbringing, really. Pretty hard to go past Revolver in the top 5 albums of all time, but it's no Technique.... DR (CTD)

Oh, the Beatles are pretty good, but I've never bought one of their records. My brother had 'em, so I taped the good bits. The Fab Four sure as heck don't need my money.

Historically, The Beatles is significant in terms of modern pop songs.... but still I think they have been played to death evrywhere... radio, old-timers clubs, uncle's house, karaoke bars and funerals....2 more to go...

...IMHO the best Beatles stuff is not the best known - if anyone at all here is interested, I recommend songs like "And your bird can sing", "The two of us" "Hey Bulldog and "It's all too much" to get a real idea of what they were capable of, not just 'The Hits'. true, they changed the face of popular music as we know it, then caused riots due to the lennon "we're bigger than jesus" remark, so kudos to that. invented backwards masking etc with martin, shame that when they were around stereo meant music in one speaker & singing in the other... learnt their trade the hard way & got more popular through word of mouth - if you ever read shout you'll know all about the early days with sutcliffe & best, several gigs a day in hamburg, keeping going on drugs. the lads done good, last few albums & 1st few aside there's some fine stuff. 'tis a shame that overfamiliarity has bred contempt but look at the scene before they were around & how their rivalry with the stones & the beach boys changed music forever. you can't argue with that.

it's so long ago. i think they've lost some of their relevance, cuz the remaining members haven't done anyting memorble in years. i for one can't understand the big about them. overrated.

Good point about the lesser known songs, I have every album bar Let It Be (I'm saving it for later; I had it for a day but I hated it, but I am a completeist to an extent), and every album has certain songs that move me more than the biggies. Listen to "Michelle", "If I Needed Someone" (both Rubber Soul), "Tomorrow Never Knows", "Love You To", "And Your Bird Can Sing" (all Revolver), and "Good Morning Good Morning" and "When I'm 64" (Sgt. Pepper), those are the ones right off the top of my head that always get to me. Give me the 6 cds of Anthology any day over "1"......

Kinks, eh? Much underappreciated (on this side of the pond anyways). If you don't have their BBC sessions double-disc put out last year, HM, shame on you.

I think the best records of all time polls are total rubsish .. Because whos to say that one record is better than the other ... Its all up to personal opinion ... Its not like in sport where you can say that your the best because you break a world record.

But I think lists with regard to 'impact' are pretty relevant ... I think the Beatles impact on music has been pretty big ... I personally wouldn't say that they have written the greatest ever record though ... That goes to Low Life, Movement, Get Ready, Technique, Brotherhood, The BEst of, Substance etc ...
