What does Barney sing best?

What songs do you think the Barnster sings best? Slowies like Run Wild, All Day Long etc.. or the rockier numbers, TBTHOG, Crystal, RTS ??

Looking back on the stuff he made with Electronic it seems less harder than some NO suggesting that perhaps he prefers to sing in a bit more of a restrained manner when left to his own devices so to speak. And Atmosphere which is a tricky one at the best of times let alone the fact that Ian Curtis shrouded his vocals in angst and despair was taken on magnificently by Barney i thought (whoops aside ;) )

I find it most annoying when friends of mine who arent avid NO fans critise him for having a weak voice and not being able to cut it live :\pissedoff:

All I can say is I'm glad that I haven't got mates like that! Are they Beatles fans?

Ceremony's my choice (although I'm big into JD, I think Barny does a much better job than Curtis did.)

Haha!! one of em is a Beatles fan as it goes!! He's also a bit Smiths fan and was most put out when Barney collaborated with Johhny, apparently theres some history of rivalry between Smiths and NewOrder fans - although i'd never been aware of it!

Gotta agree with you on Ceremony!! - superbly sung, and made to sound so fresh that a lot of people forget it was recorded in the JD era :)

What a question - Barney sings like an angel on run wild and the other slowies but you need a bit of variety and he surely CAN cut it on the rockier ones - sometimes feel he needs to cut down on the amount of howling and whooping though - be fair Barney you are a talented boy musically you don't need to try to be a cowboy to impress us... bless him :happytongue:

Always prefered his voice in the dancier numbers - like many of technique, stuff like OUt of COntrol as well, where his voice seems to 'sit' on top, slightly detached from the instruments.

I've also noticed how many club remixes of NO keep Barney's voice in the mix, where normally remixes of chart acts tend to cut out the vocal altogether...homage to the Barnster I'd say.

Thats true Seb vocals are often kept in NO remixes which is a good thing as it means that there versatile enough to cut it on a dancefloor!!

Better get my thoughts on the rapping on feel everybeat out of the way right now...

I like the fact that Barney whoops an yelps and whoo hooo's or whatever you want to call whatever he does ... It seems pretty sincere when he does it ... Means he's having a good time and getting into the music ...

I remember a quote from the bass player of At the Drive In where he says that the band don't play their songs perfectly live ... He went on to say 'if you want to see perfection, go see NSync ... If you want to see heart and soul, then see a rock band' ...

I've recently been listening to Electronic's "Twisted Tenderness" quite a bit, and that features some of Barney's best vocal work...almost as if they took the time to do a second vocal take if the first was out of tune! But seriously folks, our man on the mic really seemed to be making an effort to singon that record.

I was very distressed, however, to hear artifacts of the diabolical Antares Auto-Tune software on that record. (That's the audio plug in that, turned up too high, gives you that Cher "Believe"/Daft Punk effect.) We love you Bernard, in or out of tune. Whoop!

My favorite vocals are on 1963, Regret and Face Up.

any moderate tempo song or ballad works really well for bernard. um, there's too many to name, so ceremony, temptation, true faith and 1963. there are songs when he sounds out of tune cuz he's pushing the limits of his voice. perfect kiss would be a good example (but i love the instrumentation on that song!)

The song that never quite finishes.......or starts ! The premature ejaculation of New Order, the song that should have been great but doesn't go anywhere after the opening 30 seconds. Hooky can't sing. End of story. Doubts even here still.....fookin' good instrumental though !

I must also agree with comments made about Dreams Never End sounding great live. Watching Hooky sing it with such power on various videos sends shivers down my spine.

i tend to enjoy bernard's voice most on their earliest material, especially chosen time, the him (with hooky singing an octave below), procession, mesh, ceremony

about the incessant(sp?) whooping: i have a video of NO performing in 1981. bernard is absolutely stone-faced and tranced out during the performance, and appears to be in a a dark mood. but still, he whoops. ie during everythings gone green (of course), truth, and temptation. actually, truth is vastly improved by the well-timed "whoop," right before the guitar kicks in. i think that the whooping is just a part of new order.

i disagree with the statement that hook cant sing. everyone in that band, including steve and gillian, have really cool voices. i think they should trade off vocals, like sonic youth. in live joy division recordings, sometimes the vocals suddenly become incredibly loud and overpowering during certain parts. sometimes, ian was just going off, but a lot of the time, it was hooky, singing his balls off behind ian.
