Heard a bit of Primitive Notion on this on Monday 9th Jan. It was the backing for a piece on the origin of the word Mackem, for some bizarre reason.

Something to do with their strange accents and the fact that they were shipbuilders - apparently they used to mak'em and then tak'em out to sea.

This hasn't got much to do with NO though, has it.

Yeah, apparently people in Newcastle pronounce(d) it Mayk 'em and people in Sunderland say Mack 'em.

Hence the name.

True though. Has about as much to do with NO/JD as Paul Young.
