Unfortunately Bob Moulder's SUGAR ended up more popular than NOVA.....
Anyway, I prefer the old stuffs......
Only cos Bob stuck to making Husker type sounds after the split, whereas Grant went off down some weird obscure art-school trip on Intolerance and The Last Days of Pompeii, and was very unlucky with Nova Mob, which is a good record. The most recent solo stuff is a bit strange in places !
The media all portrayed Bob as some kind of saint and Grant as the villain of the piece, and I ain't sure they got it 100% right.
Hey hey hey - what have we here -!! S'funny that this should come up now all of a sudden..... I never liked Bob Mould's stuff with Sugar to be honest - too much of a commercial tactic that when Copper Blue came out. Grant Hart though (whisper it!) has totally passed me by with his solo/new band stuff, sadly...I guess that's because I was by then so obsessed with getting hold of every Fugazi record that ever came out that I didn't really care much for the output of any of Hüsker Dü's ex-members' splinter-projects....
You ain't missed a lot Bert - five albums, the first of which "Intolerance" consists of Husker songs that he had written but hadn't been recorded, followed by two Nova Mob albums "The Last Days of Pompeii" and "Nova Mob", an acoustic live album called "Ecce Homo" (clever bastard !) and one a couple of years back called "Good News For Modern Man". Criminally under-rated, the boy Hart.
This thread arose because Pink Turns To Blue appeared on random play on my PC !!!
Yeah - but I certainly won't be starting one discussing the merits of The Kinks (circa 1960s-early70s) just because I happen to be listening to one of their tapes at the moment... :D :D
Mind you, I did have some truly earth-shattering admission to make on the recent "Beatles?" thread that 's currently going around... ;)
Bummed right about now as I can't find my copies of Zen Arcade and New Day Rising. 
He did provide one of my all time fave quotes; talking about record production and noise reduction, he replied "You go to all of that trouble to make noise, why reduce it?"
Robert Forster of the Go Betweens did a cover version of 2541 that wasn't too bad, though.
I'm more of a fan of Mouldy, but not neccessarily Sugar - I really like Workbook, Black Sheets of Rain and the untitled one with a hubcap on the cover. Love Husker Du, but I always thought Bob had the better voice and tunes. Just an opinion.

I know what you mean - Bob's just too far up his own arse with all his angst though. All his songs seem to be about the problems he faced with being gay and keeping it a secret from his parents (all of Zen Arcade for example), whereas at least Grant varied the subject matter a bit ! Plus, and the big winner for me, is that nearly all the poppier songs with good hooklines are Grant songs. I did a compilation once with Bob songs on side A and Grant songs on side B, and it was amazing which classics were on side B.

Exactly. It's a weird phenomenon...we all think Bob must be the better songwriter, but lay it down on tape and...hmmm...damn, Grant wrote that one? And that one? The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill, too? I thought that was Bob's.
It is amazing, though, that a band with two songwriters can come up with such consistent albums. It's not like, say, the John Entwistle tune on a Who record, or the Paul Hester track on a Crowded House record. The two talents just mesh.
