WFTSC - That Was Then And This Is Now

have your views on WFTSC changed much since you originally heard it?

I recall i that i thought most of the album was dull by their normally high standards. i really struggled with the track WFTSC tho i really liked Krafty and Night and Day and Jetstream

I now think the tracks WFTSC, Turn and Night and Day are the best tracks on it and Jetstream sounds very cheesy.

Overall, its a top album - their best album over the last 12months ;)

When I first heard the disc, I was thinking a few of these (Jetstream, Working Overtime, Krafty, Hey Now...) should have been on GR, and a few of the other songs (Player in the Leaque, Behind Closed Doors, Vicious Streak, Someone Like You, etc) should have been put on this disc. I was feeling it out to be the Technique/Republic for a new era.

Tracks like "Morning , Night and Day", "I Told You So" and "Guilt is A Useless Emotion" and "Turn" were my first picks for 'real' singles. I was easier converted to this disc as opposed to Get Ready (when it debuted).

I enjoy the songs entirely, I just still would mix up some of those tracks to be on another album. I look forward to this next album because of this.

I gradually started to like GIAUE after I heard that it was nominated for a Grammy and I really started to like Dracula's Castle, aside from Who's Joe, WFTSC, Turn, and Jetstream.

Opinion still the same.

Some absolutely beautiful and poignent tracks (Joe, Hey Now, WFTSC, Krafty, Turn) good pop tracks (Told You So, Morning..., JET) but let down by Dracula's Castle and Working... (B side at best) and poor sequencing.

After the likes of Joe, Hey Now, WFTSC and Krafty, the album pales in comparison.

It's still half baked.

My opinion on it hasn't changed one iota from the day I first heard it. I still skip the duff tracks every time like Jizzstream, Told You So, Morning N&D, Draculas Castle, in fact that whole middle section of the album is a bit embarrassing.

Technique remains the last ever NO album I play from start to finish without missing any tracks. I guess it will remain that way forevermore.:p

I still find "Juggernaut" a killer tune. It's real driving music that one! Perfect for bombing down the M6 to when you're feeling in a determined mood!

If I was a member of the band reading these tepid justifications for a couple of acceptable tracks off an awful record I think I would call it a day... imagine how little the rest of the world cares when your adoring fans cant even get it up...

I did spin WFTSC again the other day and it hasnt gotten any better... the title track is half ok but should be arranged less conventially and revolve around the simple guitar figure... Guilt could be a wonderful cover of "Now That We've Found Love What Are We Gonna Do With It" (actually I'm sure that whoever wrote that will eventually come calling a la John Denver) but settles for a bland rehash of Subculture... Krafty is lovely until the bludgeoning chorus... the rest is awful arena rawk and adult disco that is beyond embarassing...

Initially wasn't so keen on WFTSC, Turn or Dracula's Castle and I felt positively ill about J-E-T.

Have an improved via of the lot now...

Guilt and Krafty were instant faves and still are.

WFTSC's a funny one really. It's not that bad but also not that good. I did buy the album on release, wasn't that impressed at first but the songs were becoming more and more listenable as time went by. Still, the songs didn't capture my attention like some of NO's past work. It's alright I guess, just nothing to rant and rave about.

it wasn't in my top ten albums of the year then & it still isn't now.

My favourite is "I told you so". Really love it. Took ages to get into it though. I also like Turn and the first 3. It aint a classic, but I have high hopes for the reformed JoyDivision doing a soundtrack.

I love most of the album now as I did then. The ones that had to grow on me were Jetstream and GIAUE. Working Overtime ain't bad, but if I were them I would have left it off the album.

So why do you continue to bother listening???

Exactly; why do you? What's the point in carrying on listening to a band you don't even like? Also, why come onto a message board relating to that band just to slag them off? I don't get it.

Anyway, to get back to the point of this thread, my views on WFTSC haven't really changed. It was one of my albums of 2005 and when I fancy listening to some NO, it's still one of the first CDs I reach for.

dracula's castle's grown on me. jetstream, i'm afraid, never will.

The whole album's grown on me.Instantly liked Krafty,Guilt and I Told You So,but couldn't see what all the fuss was about Turn.I love it now.

it is a great album. i instantly liked it, except for acouple of songs like working overtime,which i usually skip, and jetstream, which i can listen to. unlike getready, which it took me quite a while to really appreciate.

The same, apart from that I haven't come to appreciate Get Ready yet.

my view has changed i like it a whole lot less that the 1st few times i heard it. The title track is the only song i could bear to put on the iPOD i got for X-mas i always detested Jetstream and still think its an the Worst NO song ever(my opinon folks) but listening to it only the title track stands out to me everything else sounds like what NO thought they Should sound like instead of trying to do something new, granted they always had their sound but it was usually done diffrently i dunno i hate this record, hopefully the next one is better

After several months of hopeless listening I realised that this album wasn't a grower and that it would remain amongst NO's worst albums to me. Objectively however, it isn't worst than Get Ready. But Get Ready was a come-back album and I consider it as such, while I put high expectations in WFTSC before it was released, only to be disappointed.

Several songs are cheesy, there are too many boring heavy-guitar-based shit and, as someone said before, the middle part of the album is simply embarrassing. The two Stuart Price songs don't fit with the rest, and the whole thing sounds inconsistent.

Please, New Order, I'd like more songs like Turn or Here to Stay.

I wasn't that impressed when i first bought it. Took it out of my car for a few months but it's now back in and there's quite a few i like, Hey Joe, Turn, Krafty. I don't think anything could beat Substance 1987 for me.

i like Jetstream too.

not as good as Technique but better than Republic.

For me I can truly say this is my favorite CD I just love everything on it, I still listen to it almost everyday in my car or ipod.

My views on the cd have not changed much, exept Jetstream does sound a little cheesy now. My favorite songs then & still now are Turn, WFTSC, Joe?, Krafty. But what has changed is my worst songs. Before was Guilt & Draculas Castle. Now its Guilt & Jetstream. I learned to love Draculas Castle. I fell in love with the guitar in the chourus. The rest of the songs are just great songs. Yes even I told you so. So for me I stongly give this cd a 9/10.

I'm suprised how negative a lot of your posts are. I love the album though I agree it gets a little uninspired in the middle.

One of the best albums of the year. Though I'm at odds with most of your opinons of New Order. I'm SICK TO DEATH of their older stuff because I've heard it 50,000 friggin times, I love their more rock-oriented direction (Working Overtime and Rock the Shack are awesome!!) and care very little about the latest club music, it's become very dull. Bernard's lyrics aren't up there with Dylan or the Stones but he's a very good songwriter. I think he gets slagged more for his tone of voice while he's singing, he sounds like he's just making up shit off the top of his head, but it works. The best lyriics he's written are much better then the lyrics of most of todays top rock bands whose lyrics are so dull, safe and generic they don't even make an impression in your consciousness.

WFTSC, Turn and Guilt I liked right off the bat and WFTSC has grown to be my favorite track. Didn't like Hey Joe at first (title perhaps) but now I like it alot. All the others are ok and still remain to be so.

I actually played it last week for the first time in months and my opinion remains unchanged. Some really good tracks, some ok, and some downright shite ones. Overall not a fantastic achievement. It's gone back in the drawer for a while, I'm afraid.

Same here except for the fact that I loved Dracula's Castle and still do.

Interesting... I really like their rockier stuff too but we seem to be massively in the minority!

I still play the album on MP3 player a lot, so in that context its still a great album. In fact Ive now changed my mind. WFTSC is better than GR. Whos Joe? has grown on me bigtime. Its a great track with good beats, guitar and chorus. Turn is also pop perfection. The rest is a mixed bag. M,N&D and Draculas Castle and WFTSC are missing something, I dont know what, but they SHOULD have been great tracks.

I think the album is great but not brilliant. I dont know whats missing as theres some great ideas on there. Maybe its the kitchen sink style production. And as for Working Ovetime, what a complete pile of poo that is. Barney sounds like he's singing a different song to the music!!!

I liked it when I first heard it, and I like it more now. It is definitely a grower, but instantly likeable, not instantly loveable. However, I really can't do Jetstream, just can't, sorry! Always press 'skip'. Turn is one of NO's best songs, ever.

I still think it's a great album despite Ana Matronic. When I play the CD I usually skip Jetstream and Working Overtime.

I've learnt to love I Told You So... but Working Overtime is a fumble :(

My opinion hasn't really changed - still love the first 4 tracks (although I still prefer Krafty to WFTSC) and Turn. MNAD, Dracula's Castle are ok - think I liked them more when the album first came out, but they haven't stood up so well recently. I Told You So is bearable but nowt special, and I really don't see what all the fuss about GIAUE is for. Jetstream I can't figure out - sometimes I like it, sometimes I have to skip. Working Overtime is better than Rock The Shack and I don't mind them 'rawking' out but not a great closer for me... Turn would have rounded the album off nicely... That's everything isn't it? I mostly listen to WFTSC in the car and I do tend to play the first 4 tracks and then rewind, play again and then stick one of the older albums on - over all Republic, GR and WFTSC aren't 'listen-all-the-way-through' choices for me - still some great stuff on them , on a par with the best tracks from the 80s, but nowhere nerar as consistent as Low-Life, Technique or PC&L... even Brotherhood ususally gets a straight run-through...
