Just thinking... After the peak of mass awareness, publicity and success around the time of World in Motion, they seem to have slowly slinked away again....

Are New Order back underground in some kind of weird post modern way...?

Evidence:

Virtually no radio play.Release formats aimed mostly at fans.Publicity sporadic and hard to be aware of unless a NOOL or WIM visiter.Diminished mainstream fanbase, but solid hardcore fanbase.Most media types thinking they split and did nothing more after Republic.Subliminal marketing; I.E. Clips of NO music played on Suzie and Trinnie's (or whatever the fuck they're called) make over show... Turn was the outro music this week!

Yes, yes, I know they won the Godlike NME genuis and The Hall of Fame in 2005, but no-one pays attention to the genius award and they were completely cut out of some Hall of Fame broadcasts...

to be honest New Order haven't gone underground, most music and radio stations has gone way too overground: take a look at the 'charts' if you dare, or look at who is actually being featured these days in magazines like the 'no morrrisey express'...no one cares about 'old' bands any more...bands that last two singles are considered a success, so what hope do New Order have??

And the boys keep plugging away, but are generally considered too 'dad rock' to be noticed by the men in charge of these stations or magazines, i mean getting a 'god like genius' award is like getting your bus pass really...well done for lasting so long...here's a medal

they get recoginition because they've been around so long, but sadly its not for their music these days...which i think is in some cases better than ever...

anyway who cares if they get played on shows like steve wright on Radio 2...as long they keep producing good stuff we fans like and keep playing rocking gigs I personally don't mind...they don't need a new audience, the old one is still right here listening away...(and i never listen to music radio anymore its all shite)

i for one couldn't care if i didn't hear NO on the radio because if i wanted to listen to new order i'd stick on my mp3 player or bung a cd in my car...its not that hard

NO will always remain NO and they are in a 'niche' of their own be it over or under the ground...

I'd guess New Order and the 'good people' at Warners care - after all, Radio 2 has supplanted Radio 1 as the nations' most popular station. NO might be (ahem) Dad Rock, but that's what the masses are listening to...

I think you're being a tad overanalytical here and more than one of the points in your 'evidence' are incorrect. Waiting For The Sirens' Call has had a good deal more publicity and TV appearances than Get Ready did. WFTSC has produced more singles than GR, we've had Singles 2xCD, a raft of awards etc. Krafty was never off the radio for a number of weeks...

New Order are far from a band returning to the underground, I would say their profile is higher than it's ever been. I think this phrase from NOStory has been latched onto but it's really not relevant to the band's records in this day and age.

and as for Krafty, Ive never bloody heard it ont he radio once!

I have heard nothing on mainstream UK radio stations from either Get Ready or WFTSC at any time of the day...

but I have heard many a clip from GR and WFTSC as backing tracks to umpteen segways on BBC shows...

Maybe Alistar is nipping in from a parallel universe...

Heard Krafty on Radio 1 not long before it came out... Friday evening - may even have been one of those dance-type shows?! But that aside, even though I do listen to Radio 1 quite a lot on the drive to and from work (not by choice - only when I get lift with the missus), haven't heard anything apart from that... Lots of bits and pieces on the TV as background music (including LWTUA on Hollyoaks I seem to remember and Turn a couple of times)...

For TV appearances, NO were on Jimmy Kimmel in the US. They played Krafty and LWTUA. I'm sure there were more in the UK. For promotion, the Tower Records near where I worked had a large display poster of the album cover when WFTSC was released. I don't recall Get Ready getting much promotion. Four years ago, I walked into a record shop near my high school to trade some old CDs and tapes for Get Ready, but the album wasn't even listed as a new release. The cover had a sticker for the single "Crystal" on it and for it being NO's first release in 8 years, but it was mixed in with the old albums. New albums, even in a small used record store are put on display someway usually.

As far as awards, Guilt is a Useless Emotion is being nominated for a Grammy for best dance song, but over on the other side of the pond, the album and the band have won some more credible awards.
