My favourite Joy Division songs change every month or so, at the moment it is:

1. Komakino (one of their greatest songs, and it was released on a free flexi-disc!?)
2. Decades (last song on "Closer")
3. The Drawback (from the unreleased RCA album)
4. Dead Souls (my favourite JD song)
5. In A Lonely Place (Demo, crap recording, but there is something about it that gets me every time)

Here we go again...

Atmosphere would've been in my top 5 but I think I've heard too much of it these days on New Order live boots. The song seems to have lost some mystique ever since they slavishly started trundling it out at every single gig.

Having said that the Joy Division original is simply a beautiful track. Some credit has to go to Martin Hannett of course, it would've sounded alot more 'ordinary' without his particular brand of sonic manipulation as would the majority of JD's work.

Have you heard "Chance", the first version of "Atmosphere", produced by Stuart James, whoever the hell he is?

Stuart James was the Piccadilly Radio producer - the song was recorded for a Piccadilly session along with The Only Mistake, These Days, Atrocity Exhibition and Candidate.

I could vote for Ceremony or IALP but they were first released by NO, in fact there are only 2 released versions of Ceremony (Still and Heart and Soul) and both incomplete, without the full lyrics. The IALP version was released in 1997 (mastered from an old low quality tape).
