Any New Wave-ers in the audience?

Just thinking about some of my favorite New Wave artists (you know, got together during punk era, but weren't as gloomy as Post-punk), just wondering what you guys thought of:

Elvis Costello

Soft Boys

XTC

Squeeze - Always liked 'em but it's not exactly cool for cats to admit that, is it ?

Elvis Costello - Genius. Probably the best songwriter I have ever heard.

Never did care much for Squeeze.

Think the last Elvis C. album I bought was Imperial Bedroom.

Soft Boys were pretty good, and a lot of Robyn's stuff with the Egyptians also rates. Still can't believe that Debbie Gibson covered I Wanna Destroy You with The Circle Jerks at CBGB's.

XTC: saw 'em live once, and they were very good. Still have all of their albums. Sometimes, though, Andy could be way too clever for his own good though lyrically.

XTC got my vote..... Been following them a long time...now I'll just have to start buying all those Remasters they've out recently...

How about the 2-tones stuff? Anyone?

1979 - 1983 is my favourite music period. I always found XTC very good. But i wouldn't call it new wave.

To me new wave bands are: the cure, the sound, comsat angels, echo/bunnymen.

Speaking of The Sound: is there anyone out there remembering those guys? There record From the lion's mouth is one of the best I've ever heard. I never could find a cd of it and unfortunately i don't own the record. But last week i downloaded the mp3's at audiogalaxy. If you want to listen to someting really good (apart from NO :)) just download a couple of songs. You won't be disappointed.

i listened to the self titled flock of seagulls and you know what? its pretty good. it beats the shit out of duran duran anyday. it was pretty popped out, but with cool synth sounds and science fiction themes. the guitarist plays leads sort of like a more pop version of barney, when he used to play leads. i like xtc, i dont like the squeezed, and i like elvis costello's spectacles.

anyway, the best band from that era had to be sonic youth

A Flock of seagulls are brilliant. Its just a shame everyone remembers Mike Score's haircut more than the music. He's bald on top these days by the way

eh, there's something to be said for many of the bands listed here. and especially for the Dead Milkmen, cos i know that not nearly enough people have listened to/appreciate them. who can't love "Instant Club Hit (You'll Dance to Anything)" from _Bucky Fellini_? and even later stuff like "I Dream of Jesus"...true brilliance.

of course, not really considered in the same league as more "serious" bands, but hey. it's everyone else's loss, really. ^^

Elvis Costello - half good half shite. XTC - I was a big fan in the early 80s, but not quite as big on them as I was on all the two-tone bands. Now THEY were absolutely Class Acts (Specials/Special AKA, Madness, Selecter Mk I). Not too keen on the others though - Bad Manners, Bodysnatchers, The Beat, Swinging Cats, etc.

I was into a lot of the oi/skin/punk bands around this time (too many to list save for Blitz, Discharge, No Future, Meters, to name but four).

Anyone remember all those dodgy "one-hit new-wave" bands of the late70s/early 80s too? E.g. Martha & The Muffins, Split Enz, Regents, The Jags, The Chords, The Passions, etc etc?

P.s. Am I the only one here who thinks plain skinny ties are still quite cool? :D

barney had some good skinny ties during jd, especially his spotted one. didnt blitz have a song mentioning "backstreet boys wearing boots and braces razor blazes and angry faces?" i wonder if they were referring to vicious packs of disgruntled boybands prowling the bars of the uk

I also liked The Dead Milkmen's "Bithcn' Camaro". ".....bitchn' Camaro, bitchn' Camaro, I ran over my neighbor......"

As far as Split Enz are concerned, how could you place them in the category of "one hit wonder"? We all know "I Got You", but who can forget "Six Months In A Leaky Boat" or "I See Red". Plus they morphed into Crowded House, one of my favs.

I'm kind of showing my age a bit here by going on about long lost skin bands and suchlike, but Blitz had a fookin champion e.p. out in 1984 called "New Age". And no! It's not about hippies either!

(let's hear it for skinny ties! Better than all those tossy kipper poncey designer ones all these Colin Hunt clones wear these days....I should know, I work in a bank with a few of them!....yeuch!)
