Blue Monday

I heard that this song was written with regards the Falklands war. Is this true, does anybody know anything about that? Cheers.

Bernard always denied that it was about the Falklands War. The original working title though was "How Does It Feel?" - at the same time, Crass were releasing their "How Does It Feel To Be The Mother Of 1000 Dead?" and anti-Thatcher and anti-Falklands War song, so they quickly changed the title.

I don't recall seeing the track title ever listed between its live debut in November 82 and the press releases in late Feb 83.

I friend of mine said that he thougt about the attack on Dresden when he heard Blue Monday!

Surely it would explain the 'I see a ship in the Harbour'?

I've always felt that the lyrics are very much in the same mode as T.S Eliot in that Barney pieces them together, and while they don't seem to make much sense they convey something different to others, so they take it anyway they want e.g. R.E.M

At the end, the person wants him back, but he leaves anyways....the ship imagery just sets the scene (they are by the port obviously since he tells her to leave him when we walks down to the beach).

Blue Monday has a great set of lyrics..they really fit the songs mood, and they are icy, mysterious, and thought provoking.

Some have even interpreted the lyrics as being about Ian and Annik.

for what it's worth, probably not much.. I met a fellow near the front row at the Oakland, CA show last year who claims to have met Bernard backstage once and asked him about the meaning of the song.. and according to said fan, the song is about suicide. Kind of lends a different perspective to the song after I heard that. This same fellow was lucky enough to get the drum sticks tossed from Hooky to him during that same show (he was wearing a Kraftwerk t-shirt).

Thought the ship inthe harbour was off the saying:

"a ship in the harbour is safe, but that's not what ships are made for"

Which would agree with what you are saying. The relationship is controling, keeping him "safe", but it is restricting him from being himself. Just a thought.
