LWTUA versions

On the 7 inch 1980 version, there is an alternate mix or I think its Pennine mix, is this the demo version heard in the box set?

Or how about the Permanent mix, last track.

The Pennine version was the original, 'punk' version (the one they played live during the recording of the video). It is the first track on the Permanent compilation and is also on Substance (that's the JD version, Rich:))

They didnt like this version so re-recorded it, producing the slower version which is on disc 2 of heartandsoul.

Two other 'proper' versions of this - the Peel sessions recording on disc 3 of heartandsoul and the Permanent mix, the last track on said compilation.

Erm, I may be wrong (but I'm actually right :p ), but the version on Substance is the re-recorded version (the same as on Heart & Soul CD2). Track 1 on Permanent is indeed the Pennine version while the last track is just a remix, made for the circumstance.

You might well be right. I lent by copy of Substance to a friend a while ago. Could have sworn it was the punk version though.

The last track on Permanent is indeed the LWTUA "Permanent Mix", a more acoustic take on the re-recorded version that appears on Substance (the 'real' LWTUA).

Don't forget "Love Will Tear Us Apart (Again)" which, as far as i know, was only released on the 12" version of "LWTUA".

Okay, don't know what people mean by the "punk" version exactly, but these are the official versions I know of:

1. 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' (3:25) - the commonly-known version that we know from 'Substance' and CD 2 of 'Heart and Soul'. The version we're all familiar with (so kind of the "original" mix if you like, but is was actually recorded in March 1980 along with the 12" re-recording of 'She's Lost Control', after the Pennine Version). Guess they wanted another go at recording it, a la 'Ceremony'. Joy Division Central says:

Due to certain members of the band's misgivings about the version of "Love Will Tear Us Apart" recorded only a couple of months earlier (see session no. 13), they decided to have another go at recording the song. This somewhat slower take can be found on the "A"-side of the single, and remains the most well-known version of the song.

2. The 'Pennine Version' (3:10) that was on side B of the original 12", and is track 1 on 'Permanent'. This was recorded on 8/1/80 along with other B-side 'These Days' and 'The Sound Of Music'. Appears on both the seven inch and twelve inch, according to the discography at Joy Division Central.

3. The Peel Session version (3:22), on 'Peel Sessions' and 'Heart And Soul'

4. The 'Permanent Mix' (3:37), a newly mixed version for the 90s re-release, and the last track on 'Permanent'.

5 The 'Arthur Baker Mix' (4:20), a slow, dubby version that isn't as bad as you'd think - even though the concept of "remixing" Joy Division is an odd one.

6 'Live Paris 18.12.79' (3:18), from 'Les Bains Douches 18 December 1979'

the earlier version is "punk" because Steve's drums are more punkier and faster/ busy. the A- side version has more distinctive minimal drumming.

Hannett often seemed to be going against the "punk" instincts of the band members, sometimes to good effect, sometimes ruining the song like "These Days"

So the 'faster' version is a studio recording of what they play live-as JD and now as NO, right? The main difference is the style of Steve's drumming-he doesn't play sixteenth notes live or on the Peel version.
