PART 1 (from the Daily Record) THE GOOD.....

New Order Glasgow Barrowland Oct 7 2001 Playing their first live gig in Glasgow in 12 years, New Order took Barrowland by storm with a set that defied both critics and the passage of time with its power, energy and verve. Kicking off with the new single Crystal, they immediately proved that far from being 80's has-beens, they are right at the top of their game. Arm aloft, bass genius Peter Hook announced "This one's for every last one of you" before launching into a blistering Transmission. New addition Phil Cunningham on guitar was clearly having the time of his life as track after track proved the bands tenacity and on-going creativity. The only downbeat was the absence of Gillian Gilbert's keyboard part on Touched by the hand of God. True Faith was the highlight of the set and sent the packed hall into a seething mass of bouncing, singing bodies. NEW ORDER ARE BACK!

Squabbling stars are bang out of order New Order Glasgow Barrowland October 8 2001

Who exactly do New Order think they are? After an absence of 12 years, a full house was expecting a gig worthy of one of the most pioneering bands of recent times. But the £25 a head audience were kicked in the teeth when the band walked off after barely an hour. Things couldn't have got off to a better start, with a rousing version of Crystal, plus old favourites Love Will Tear Us Apart and Regret. Despite the bulging waistlines and Bernard Sumner's ridiculous 1980's hairdo, the boys were proving they could still produce the goods live. Peter Hook's infectious bass lines linked Sumner's vocals with all the power of their glory days in the eighties. However, relations between the two appeared frosty, as Hook pranced around stage like a court jester, much to the annoyance of the moody lead singer. Still, they managed to keep things rolling with classics such as True Faith and Bizarre Love Triangle. Mixing the old seamlessly with the new, they produced sparkling versions of Transmission and new single 60mph. But just as this was beginning to look like an unforgettable gig, Sumner & Hook started getting shirty. A few obscenities were exchanged between songs and the pair appeared to tire of the whole thing. All very Rock'n'Roll. But when they squared up at one point it was a case of handbags at dawn. Soon Sumner made his excuses and led the band offstage. As the houselights came on, hundreds of disappointed fans showed their disgust, booing their fallen idols. Maybe they're sick of performing Blue Monday encores, or they just turned up for the cash. Whatever, NEW ORDER WERE BANG OUT OF ORDER!

Fuck me, what do people expect? Costume changes and hi-kicking dance routines?

Personally, I thought the 2nd night was better, and the lack of encore just 'heightened' the tension.

Does anyone know for sure why they left the stage? Did someone have Diahhrea? Were they Too Pumped Full of Drugs? Did the after show Cheeseburgers arrive too soon?

Apparently Hooky burst an eardrum or something during Transmission, and wanted to go off stage, and stayed on for one more song before going off. There had been an encore planned ! Don't know this for sure, but this was one of the more plausible reasons offered at the time on here.

I can never understand why people get so het up over not doing encores...this is New Order...not exactly famed for their 3 hour long sets and 14 song encores are they?

I have serious doubts about the busted eardrum. you don't recover from that overnight. if that were the case, it would have been made known on the night or soon after.

I once saw Bryan Adams and he only played for 17 seconds. That was because i punched my self in the face for ever even considering being dragged to one of his concerts.

Well said boys. This gig didn't raise any eyebrows or piss me off cos you knew what you were gonna get in those days. Which is partly why I was so surprised at the Glasgow reaction. There were plenty of lads there who looked like they should recall the 80s but fook me, they went mard in the heed when the lights came up & no encore....threatening the road crew, lobbing anything they could get their hands on towards the stage etc etc

Should have expected the worst when everyone had to walk thru a metal detector on the way in!! remember GF? ;)

None the less, it was fooking hilarious :D

Now I think from reading that second review why they don't plan on coming here to the states. See it seems like since Hooky is pretty much a crowd pleaser, that must make Barney a little jealous as he was always the loved one of the band.... that could be the reason they won't come, Barney is jealous! :p

Was that Billy Sloan who reviewed it? Wouldn't surprise me as he's a U2 loving wanker. The second night was actually the better gig although I can understand why NO first-timers were a tad pissed off.

Zico - The review of the 2nd gig was by Graeme Lennox, the first review was by Catriona Killin. Know what you mean with Billy Sloan :nod: It's the same down here with that twat from The Sun, Dominic Mohan - head so far up Bongo's arse it's unbelievable;)
