As one of the founders of Factory Records, the Manchester-based independent record label, creative director Peter Saville was in the unusually privileged position of enjoying complete creative freedom to design its artwork. He treated the covers of Factory's albums and singles as visual essays to express the ideas that happened to interest him at the time.
For the cover of New Order's 1983 album Power, Corruption and Lies, Saville (1955-) created a post-modernist juxtaposition of historic and contemporary images. He found the central image - a 19th century still life by the French artist Henri Fantin-Latour - as a postcard in the shop of the National Gallery in London.
Alongside the painting, Saville positioned a sequence of coloured symbols in which each colour represented a letter in the album's title. Resembling a printer's proofing strip, the colour coding was inspired by a similar combination of industrial and historic images devised by the Dutch graphic designer Gert Dumbar in a poster for the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. Unfortunately for Saville, the reproduction house printed one 'letter' in the wrong colour, which prompted complaints from New Order fans to the music press.
Regrettably it didn't pass the first voting round.
