Been having a conversation with humans tonight about New Order.

Of course I'm piss bored with Blue Monday.

But, it IS...New Order.

Anyone care to disagree?

To Humanity it's bound to be BM.

luckily for me..all my mates. Some good arguments for plenty of others. But, BM is the signature. None of us could argue a case against.

and if anyone is interested it came down to BM, BLT & Ceremony. I would listen to both of the runners up before BM. But...BM will always win. Well to an '80's kid anyway

Oddly enough, I know at least 3 people (humans would be a strong word for em) who think NO come down to the Pump Panel Confusion. Thankfully one of them asked to hear the original and prompty asked for much more No :D

JD had done electronic tunes remember. And JD had EXCEPTIONAL production values....so while EGG and Temp' are a huge leap forward musicaly....the stagger backwards again because of pissy production....never in the history of music has there been such a gulf between the artistic and technical merits of 2 tunes.

See your point with Temptation's production but don't see what's so wrong with EGG.

My point is tracks like Temptation, EGG, Hurt, and most of Power Corruption Lies came out before Blue Monday and showed a shift from Joy Division. Although to be fair I wasnt around as it happened so I'm going on what I hear on record.

Some truth in that, considering the band were just messing around with drum machines trying to create something to play during their encore. They've said they had no idea it would be so big.

Although it does sound VERY similar to a few tracks of PCL.

Well yes, Temptation's a fucking disaster and they've been recording it ever since to make up for it...unfortunately without the ARP and DR50, the later ones gain in production and lose in art. But while EGG's not BAD...it could be a hell of a lot better. Hurt needs sorted out as well.

probably my greatest NO fantasy would be to get my hands on the original multi's of those track....mind you....after 20+years of binding rot and magnetic print-through I'd guess they sound like cack.#

Movement is spectacular esp. for the year.whereas Substance 87 is probably the most completely noticed.

I understand what BA was saying in the thread start.To the general public it is BLUE MONDAY!!!! but if i play people i know - TEMPTATION or PERFECT KISS,they suddenly say " o fucking hell,forgot about this one ,i love this one "

yep and by signature tune we might be judging what people know best and that is probally the brit award winning true faith video i suppose

Praise Allah that Blue Monday was not their only hit. For me temptation is their greatest achievement even though it took nearly a decade to get it smoothed out.

Having said that, see what is said here about Ceremony:

When I got into New Order in the mid-90s (I was an early teenager), where I was (middle America) it seemed to me that "Bizarre Love Triangle" was New Order's signature song. I don't know if it was because of the Frente version (which is what led me to New Order) that sparked interest in that song at the time, but that was the only of their songs I'd hear on the radio. Second to that was "True Faith"--if that was on the radio, it would only be if I requested it on my favorite station's Saturday morning retro show. Only if I was lucky would that show play anything more "obscure," such as "Blue Monday" or "Perfect Kiss." Now, though, I get the impression that "Blue Monday" has become the main New Order song, maybe because of Orgy, maybe because I've moved to a different region (West US), maybe because of the dance-punk trend, maybe because respect for New Order seems to have grown, I don't know.

...And I'm talking about "signature song" here in reference to the general public, not in reference to the New Order fanatics. (New Order fanatics don't need a signature from New Order--we'll know them instantly...)

Now that I think about it, could the signature now be "Love Will Tear Us Apart"? I saw them on a couple of TV programs from last year, and they used their limited airtime to play that song (and Barney seemed really insistent both times on making reference to Ian before starting the song). Maybe it's just because it's a guitar song and they're a guitar band now (and dammit, they just won't play "Sunrise"), but now they seem to think that's their most important song.

But I'm pretty sure most people here would think of "LWTUA", as a Paul Young song.

Hurts to admit but Blue Monday IS New Order in my neck of the woods haha. Defo. I know cause a mate of mine (cool chick btw and I love her much) asked me once: What was that band you’re obsessed with again? (which was a weird question to ask cause I probably talk about the band most of the time). Then went searching through her iPod collection and found BM there. I think my grandma has heard about BM too. Well I’ll ask her sometime. BM is everywhere, even in my local pub being played right after the Pet Shop Boys – It’s a sin, haha.

From everyone's responses, it seems to depend on where you live or had lived. In America, the general public identifies BLT as NO's most identifiable song, in my opinion. So my answer is BLT, BM just seems like an exercise in early disco mainly using drum machines and lumped together with Georgio Moroder (sp?)and kraftwerk which sparked trance/house music as we know it. Not to take anything away from BM's weight and importance.

defin.- It's a Sin. hugely mixed Blue Monday. may be the only tune that have ever heard being played at all. in the last years. and that's only on a weekend dance portion. which is a sad joke because the DJ first yabbles over and through the first honest couple minutes.. out of Man- c --- legendary Nu - O dah from --.(pls. shh)
for recognizable Tempation could be a tops. but Ceremony, Hurt , Shellshock. seem almost to be what NO are.
