New Order 1980-1993 compilation

A friend has requested that I compile a 'Best Of' New Order for him. I'm not a huge fan of Get Ready or WFTSC, so decided to limit it to 1980-1993. I had to spread it over two 80 minute CDs. It's been doing my head in, but this is what I've come up with:

CD1

There's room for another track on CD1 - but what? Don't like Movement much, so don't really want to include another track from that. Thought about Mesh, but it doesn't quite make the grade IMHO. Was going to include The Village, but five tracks from PCL seems like overkill...

On CD2, it was a choice between Love Vigilantes (which I find rather cheesy) and Broken Promise (which I think is too similar to Sunrise). The other problem was choosing the tracks from Technique. Love less and All the Way had to be in there - but impossible to choose between Run, Mr Disco and Vanishing Point...

What d'ya all think? Have I missed anything out - what would you have included?

Confusion Shellshock This Time of Night

No Subculture? (low life version) As much as I love All The Way & Loveless, Mr Disco & Vanishing Point have to be there. But do you leave off Run? Will Elegia fit on the end of disc 1?

Round & Round is ought to be somewhere in there...

Remove Murder and add Chosen Time and Mesh on CD1 and replace Elegia and AIIWIW with The Village and Hurt 7" and job's a good un.

Traditionally I used to manage to make NO collections within one CD (before 2001; now I don't make them):

I'd also try to slip Don't Do It on there, since it rules.

Now come on! No New Order compilation is complete without the inclusion of that holy divine trinity of "Subculture" (12" Robie Mix), "Shellshock" (godlike 7" edit) and "State Of The Nation" (full length 12").

I deliberately left them off! Shellshock I can just about stomach, but not SOTN - and Subculture makes me want to kill people.

Why does no-one like Murder? I love it...

Found myself listening to Brotherhood the other day - is this the worst New Order album? Some of it is truely abysmal - sounds like it was written and recorded in about two hours! You'd have thought Barney could have taken just a little more time over the lyrics.

Where can I get Don't Do It? Is it just on the b-side of Fine Time? Don't think I've ever heard it

Ditch Elegia from CD 2 and finish it off with Avalanche... Always end NO comps with that one...

Yes, I was thinking exactly the same thing- but no room for it...

And I like the fact that the whole thing begins with Ceremony and ends with Regret - two very similar songs in some respects (especially the endings).

don't add state of the nation. you want your friend to like new order, don't you?

On a similar vain, does anybody have a good track listing for a combined compliation of both Joy Division and New Order, from the beginning to present, which would fit on a single CD ?

Im having difficulty convincing my girlfriend that NO/JD are not bland....

If you really must exclude the last two albums, at least consider Here to Stay.

They did go through that awful mid 80s phase, post Low Life. It was pretty desperate, until they released True Faith and then all was right with the world again...

Best of JD and NO on a single CD? Now there's a challenge... might think up something later.

Sub-culture is certainly one of the best songs they've ever done. The version on Low-life, not that God forsaken remix that was released as a single and is on Substance.

Do you have a CDR shortage or something? Start disc 1 with Transmission and end Disc 2 with Regret. Personally, I think you're selling your friend short if you don't include Crystal too.

So I take it even the fantastic "Bizarre Love Triangle" didn't make the grade in your book then - and that came just before they released the overtly commercial "True Faith" ?

Yeah, sorry forgot about BLT... the rest of Brotherhood wasn't up to much tho. I just remember thinking when TF came out that they'd been off track for a while and then they came out that fantastic song.... and then Technique of course.

Everything will turn into "Internationl" eventually :(
