regret, for those of you that were there...

I liked "Regret" and was very happy looking forward to the new album finally... kinda hoping New Order was going to finally find some long overdue "pop" success in the USA like The Cure and Depeche Mode were receiving in the early 90s

was bored very quickly by Republic, disappointed by the lack of edge and the loss of the distinct New Order personality on the record. the intial reviews in the USA were positive when the album first came out thou, but Republic became very common in the used CD stores, it sold well initually but bored many

But yeah i played it to death when it came out and also taped the Mark Goodier show with the previews of Republic.

It doesnt' do so much for me these days but back then it was great

I was also fooled by the Fire Island Remix. A DJ called Pete Mitchell (now on Virgin) was at Manc's Key 103 and played it to death. Then suddenly started playing the album version, which for me sounded really gritty and archaic, compared to the FI remix which I had took to be the single version.

Yes, it was an amazing comeback. Republic is a fantastic album. It is very polished, well produced and the pinnicle of their daliance with commercialism. If it had come a back in 1991, following so close to Technique and WiM, and they had stayed together during the 90s I am utterly convinced they would have achieved global dominance.

On a previous point made I thought they looked absolutely sparkling and fresh in the Regret video. There's a bit where the screen is split into four with images of Barney singing under a blueish light and he looks about 23! Also I really think that they look at their most glamerous in the Baywatch version. This of course was topped off by the World video.

Great times. At the time, it boded well for the future...

Had just moved away from home and had kind of given up on the band though still loved them. Heard Regret on the radio and it just sounded so different to anything around but it was them for sure, was a bit blown away as I hadn't expected them to come back with a song so strong and uplifting - had thought they may be over! Thought it would be a one-off but then heard Ruined In A Day on the radio too and that affected me more, I was truly gobsmacked when I heard that, really heavy but it sounded incredible. Still love Republic and I think the remixes of all the singles great.

I think it came out in the springtime of 93? It seemed such a long time since Technique and I was living in a different place, feeling quite lonely and homesick, ... and it was before I got really, really old... first heard it on the tv doc of NO Story, literally could not believe my ears - it just totally captured the mood of the time for me. Utterly beautiful, so sad. Awesome. I still love it. Its my favourite NO album, my fav album of all time

and the remixes are fantastic.
