Is it just me (this wouldn't be a first) but are the 12" remix discs a lot heavier (in terms of weight... not necessarily coolness for those under the age of 21) than your average 12" or am I imagining this?
Also... I don't think I've ever bought a 12" where you play one side at 33rpm and the other at 45rpm...
Are new order breaking new ground yet again!?
I was really annoyed about that 45/33 issue.
My record deck doesn't play 45s, and the only two versions of Blue Monday I have are 45RPM!! 
yeah they did seem heavier.and its the first time i've come across 12" that play different speeds from each side

It is quite uncommon I believe.. most players have a speed change capability, but maybe the more experienced vinyl user will be able to fill you in.
However, I am told the deck we have at home is one of the finest models ever made, so it balances out.

quite rare-first I heard of it. Pretty much every turntable has a switch that allows for 33 or 45 as needed-the fun part for me is finding an adapter to fill the huge holes in 45s so they do not slide around the turn table cause all my lps only have small holes!

Hi there, yes I agree the vinyl seems heavier - though I hear it is quite common in reissues. As for the speed changes it is something I've come across before with Orbital. Nearly all of their promos have different speeds for different sides. They never explained it but it strikes me as play against DJ's who would just throw it on without listening to the track first. Mind you, even knowing there stuff it can be quite confusing. I know I've listened to the first half of halcyon at the wrong speed before.

mine have always come with an adapter that fits in a hole on the side of the turntable. i haven't bought a turntable since the mid-80s so i have no idea if they still sell them like that anymore. i'll need one for my next turntable as i have quite a few tamla motown 45s to play.

I believe vinyl discs come in differing standard weights, classical stuff usually gets the heavy treatment. The heavier the better quality, I believe.
I seem to remember the original 7" of LWTUA played 33rpm one side and 45 the other, though I don't have it any more :( so memory might be playing tricks. The 7" of temptation plays at 33rpm also.
At least they didn't change speed between tracks on one side.
If memory serves me right, there are one or two 12"s on Sarah records that play different speeds on different sides - will check when I get home - the LWTUA different speeds rings a bell as well... Never struck me as being that unusual, but maybe I'm thinking 7"s instead... Heavy vinyl is great

It's not very common. Mine has an adaptor stuck on to the bit the rubber band goes around which miraculously turns it to 45rpm speed. The alternative would be a Linn Lingo which won't happen until the Val Halla power supply dies.
Haven't played mine yet. This sounds like a pain in the arse if they are different speeds on each side. They are heavier, on the Sister Ray website they said they were 180g discs.
the heavier weight of a 12" vinyl is suppossed to increase its "collectable" value... i.e. betetr quality

What type of turntable is it? Some belt driven turntables need to top taking off and the belt putting onto a different cog (which is already there)to change the speed

In short, in order to play 45rpm on a Linn Sondek LP12 turntable, it appears that you need to purchase a Lingo Power Supply - more info here.
A review of it says:
"The Lingo, however, is a different kettle of silicon. Constructed on a single well-stuffed circuit-board running the full depth of its aluminum chassis, the inside of the Lingo looks more like a power amplifier. Which is what is is: a power amplifier intended to deliver a high-purity 120V 50Hz sinewave to the turntable's synchronous motor. In fact, it delivers two sinewaves. Whereas the Valhalla board delivered a single drive signal to the motor, with the second-phase signal derived by a capacitor, the Lingo synthesizes both phases of the supply voltage. The Lingo also offers something that we Linn owners who have collections of 12" singles have been begging for over the years—a 45rpm speed. Yes, there was always the pulley adaptor to enable the LP12 to run at 45, but this was at best a kludge."

Has it already been mentioned that the Blue Monday 12" Original Version is not the 88 original version the jacket says its supposed to be? I guess I don't mind, but I just wish it was what its supposed to be.

Doh, I didn't read the whole post, so apologies (that's what you get when I post late at night after a 15 hour day, including travelling!), but it looks as though I wasn't the only one!

it is supposed to be a computer floppy disk. yes floppy disks used to look a lot like that. i still have one of those around here somewhere. i can post an image when the shack is back up.

The '83 floppy disc has to easily outweird the new 12"s!
Twas a piece of beauty... wonder how long it'll be until the real 9" Floppies start popping up at antiques roadshows...

Yes, yet another shabby piece of quality control, although I much prefer the 83 version on the record rather than the Quincy Jones 88 remake! :)

Where the heck did those odd soundtrack(?) samples on some of the '88 versions come from ("oh no they're going at it again" etc). Some old film?

Heavier vinyl=better quality reproduction, always has. Difference used to be pretty clear on albums I acquired from the US where I already had the UK release. US vinyl much lighter, "tinny" reproduction. Recent 12" purchases in New York/Florida - US 12"s lighter than UK imports.
180g seems to be a standard. Incidentally "180g vinyl" used in ads refers to the vinyl. Sleeves on NO 12x12" weigh approx 30g, disc+sleeve approx 210g. Of the four 12" I tested, two were 180g, second 170g, third 175g. To compare, Krafty 12" came in at 130/135g.
