Was listening to Permenant (lp) on the drive home, which is an album I love to death. I love this mix, but can't seem to really get into JD Substance. Haven't got any other albums, but was wondering if Substance was a bad mix, or am I simply not a purist JD fan?

Substance is the way to go...then Closer, Les Baines Douches, and the John Peel Sessions...

The main problem I have with Substance is the treble is so high, no bass what so ever (I don't need my car shaking around, but some balance would be nice). The added bass in Permanent is what does it for me. I will try the other albums, especially Peel Show (as I like to collect peel show cds/ records). Is it on cd?

Get the BBC Recordings, which has two Peel sessions, Transmission and She's Lost Control from a television performance, and an interview with Steve Morris and Ian Curtis.

Incidentally, if you want to get some of the tracks on the cheap to see if you like them, allofmp3.com is a top site.

Substance was among the first compact discs I ever bought. Perhaps you have stumbled onto something. Recoding tech not good with early cd. 1989 IIRC? I will have to pull them out to compare.

substance is more for those in the know, as it contains a few earlier songs. permanent is better for the casual fan, who just wants the "hits".

Unknown Pleasures is great, but sometimes it's a bit too slow for my taste. Hannett's production is a little uneven, especially with regard to the guitar mix on 'She's Lost Control'.

Schduckt.

JD Substance isn't a good place to start (although it's a great place to end).

Unknown Pleasures would be the first port of call I'd recommend...

I don't have a problem with Substance. The mix is alright. I've got a Factory CD, 1992 release.
