But Johnny Marr wasn't even born in January 1963. I think this song can mean anything to anyone. I think it's about a gay love affair gone horribly wrong. That's just the picture I have in my head about the song. But if somebody else wants to think about it as a song about JFK, or about Johnny Marr, or about a straight love affair, then that's fine to me as well.

What I meant was, he wasn't born in JANUARY. "It was January, 1963, when Johnny came home with a gift for me." I'm not denying that he was born in '63. I'm just saying, he wasn't born in January.
