Apologies for yet another nerdy thread!
I didn't realise this but apparently new order were commissioned to do the whole soundtrack for Pretty In Pink and they recorded it, but it was rejected by the label. Then, as we know, they knocked out shellshock instead. Is this correct? And if so what happened to the music they recorded?!
Anyone have any clues?

I'm sure I heard that too, but have subsequently failed to locate an interview/book where it's mentioned - certainly, Mick Middle's book contradicts it and states that John Robie was brought in from the start with the end result being "Shellshock" (and no other previous versions)... I could have sworn that they did do the whole soundtrack (think it was Steve Morris who mentioned this), as you say...
On a previous thread, I mentioned that it might have appeared on the BBC Radio 1 Substance interviews of 1987?

I have a theory that at least Let's Go and Skullcrusher were recorded at roughly the same time as Shellshock(but had been played in live sets in 1984 & 1985) for Pretty In Pink but John Hughes the producer liked Shellshock and not the other 2 and preferred Thieves Like Us and Elegia. So at least Skullcrusher and Let's Go were free to be used elsewhere. Sputnik, Salvation Theme and Touched By The Hand Of God were written from scratch specifically for Salvation! in spare time they had during the US tour in 1987. As to why Elegia and Thieves never made it onto the soundtrack album? I suspect there was some very heavy pressure applied to promote Suzanne Vega's and OMD's songs more than Qwest boss Quincy Jones could/would apply in favour of promoting New Order.

To answer your question, from what I know the band initially recorded some "soundtrack" music they thought might be appropriate for Pretty In Pink but the studio execs rejected their work. So they were teamed up with John Robie and produced Shell-shock. If I recall correctly the song was recorded pretty quickly (in 24 hours or something)
Only other point to note is the soundtrack contains a unique edit of the track unavailable elsewhere.... dunno what happened to the original "soundtrack" music they wrote, it remains unreleased.
Funny though, they rejected their work, but 3 tracks made it to the movie (Elegia, Thieves Like Us, Shellshock)... 
Worst, New Order became big the following year with BLT and True Faith!

Yeah,the version on Substance with the "Come in" vocal,is on the Murder 12". But,the version from Pretty In Pink is definitely on the UK 7" Shellshock. But,if you get the american Shellshock 12" that has the 12" of Thieves as the flip! Confused? Good!
Theives Like Us Instrumental was the B-side to Murder 12". Theives Like Us Instrumental Edit was the B-side to Shellshock 7". I think it was probably the unedited instrumental used in the film, then the instrumental edit was created to back Shellshock due to it's inclusion in the film.
