What happenned pre-NOOL?
Was there a fan club / fanzine?
If so, does anyone have any clippings, fond memories, membership cards or special stickers???
Just wondering... I've been a fan since '86, but I've never heard of a NO fan club from the pre-NOOL days...

Lots of fanzines. Am sure other people can fill in more details but 'Paradise' was the most recent of the lot. The geezer who ran it, David, posted here on occasion.

Best of the lot was 'Standard', done in the 80s by Max Admiraal in Holland. Really really good quality for a fanzine back in those days. Well worth hunting down if you can. But then he got into the Sisters of Mercy instead and ruined it!
As Al says, several fanzines down the years. Paradise was one of the better ones, and were it not for David's attempts to fleece everyone by charging them over the odds for old copies I would have a complete set by now. Last Orders was also good, if a little eccentric at times. Standard was by far the best though.
Of course there was the Temptation website before this one, but little else of real quality. New Order never quite did the web, which is really surprising. I'm still frankly amazed that they haven't tried to use its potential more in terms of an official site, it would be ideal for them, but would probably involve having to do some regular work to update it!
Paradise was a really good attempt, i remember using it as some sort of discography (along with EIL) cause it was hard to compare mixes with fellow fans back then. I do have all the issues if anyone (Tim) needs a scan of any. I remember the later issues were larger A4. I remember some issues (@ the back) had addresses of other fans so there was sort of a pre gig meet up but nowt like nowadays. I distinctly remember winning some competition off of David. S and i won a signed (by all 4) postcard.
Standard was also (like Tim & Al said) a good production but it did take on a strangely gothic tone both in the typeface, articles & the bloody Sisters.. :)
Off the top of my head, pre-NOOL on the web there was:

All of these are offline now with the exception of Temptation which morphed into NOOL. You can still access some of them through the Internet Archive (Wayback machine) by putting in the address if you can remember it. Alot of these sites were very good for the period and very well updated but none of them ever really achieved the community NOOL has. NOOL achieved a community because basically, it stuck around and evolved. Alot of the above sites only lasted 3 years at most and of course, there were less fans using the net in them days.
I had my own site called Ally's Monaco Site which ran from 97 to 2001 and eventually became the official site for the band's second album. The first unofficial incarnation from 97-99 was the best and I crammed a shitload onto it but by the time I did the official site fan interest in Monaco had waned (NO were on their way back). So had mine a tad if truth be told. Fantastic memories from that 97-99 era though. While my site was predominantly Monaco I did chuck up Electronic/Other Two and New Order news whenever I could. I remember Buzzcocks and Doves were initially reported as support for Apollo 98.
There was also the Ceremony (Fac33) mailing list run by Warren Lapham which around the late nineties/early noughts was a very much a centre of activity for NO discussion (identical to Digital Republic). I'm still subscribed and I know other people around here are but it's a bit dead these days in terms of posts; a shame.
To be honest while NOOL is a great site, I miss the variation there was in NO sites back then. Now there's only really two big ones and one of them's just someone's collection.
Paradise was the most regular, and even then we had to wait fecking ages for the next issue, there were 13 in all.
I have them all here, I also have photo-copied versions of Standard and Last Orders thanks to Uncly John.
I enjoyed them all, also spent all ma pocket money on any magazine / newspaper that had the words neworder on the cover. There were some right sneaky bastards about, espescially Sounds, they used to put the words neworder on the cover and inside there'd be a wee paragraph somewhere. Bastards!
I still have the bootleg lists from people who used to post their names in the buy / sell sections of Record Mirror / NME etc...
A good lad in Scotland sorted me out with loads and loads of cassettes. If I remember right it was £3.50 for a C-90 and £3 for a C-60......happy days :D
I have a copy or two of the Paradise fanzine from about 87 or thereabouts.The old bootleg cassette network was great 
As for websites i recall visiting Procession ,Ceremony regularly back in 1999.Used to post on Temptation circa 2000-2001.Jeez seems like years ago now

Don't recall any, though you'd expect to have seen one in Paradise given the author's whereabouts! Mind you, seem to recall he only got into the Order in 87?
I can remember years ago when channel 4 had proper music listings,there were loads of record stores and fanclubs that advertised on the music pages of c4text,pre web of course.
I can distinctly remember a new order fanclub called last orders which was run by a certain bobby shamra,thats all i know cos i didnt join,can anyone else remember this same info?
or is it just me thats got one of them pornographic memories? 
N.Bobby Bhamra - complete nutcase! Used to ring me up every 30 seconds, and wrote one article in my name in one edition of Last Orders when I missed the print deadline! Had a shedload of bootlegs off me as well. Not sure it was a fanclub as such, thought it was just a fanzine. I only got 3 or 4 copies, seem to recall there were two guys doing it, Bhamra and someone called Jon Chambers, who quit quite early on. This may have been how I first encountered Shug, through Last Orders!

Don't know where my old Paradise copies got too but i did find this one.A zine called Decades .This was the first issue from 1994.Edited by a guy called Richard Lewis.The zine was based in Cardiff.
Mainly tape lists but a few NO gig pics and articles too.
I'm starting to wonder if Sebastien was the only one to get NOISE (the fanzine) on which honor the news room of this website is named..

I notice Mad Darren's name there though!!! He took them pictures in 86.....the one and only time that mad bastard was sober enough to hold a camera? :D

And Tim, yer definitely correct, I would have gotten yer details from that fanzine. I am still waiting on Sydney Selina's, Melbourne Powerhosue and Glasgow SECC......I've been waiting 17 years ya basta ;)
And please don't mention scans of Paradise, the last time someone did that, David Smith came online and told people off for it, he started reprinting for a while, but we havnae seen him about for ages. Top man he is, twas him who sorted me, John & Lorraine tickets for the Liverpool Olympia.

in a sense, think that it is a good thing that they haven't put together an Official Web Site because it makes sites such as this that much better. Go Spotnick ! as a learning experience that visitors perhaps feel is more .. organic for lack of a better word. A little more vibrant that could collapse ( although it won't- right ) at any time in the same way that The Order were never a certainty.
Can't help but think of lines- It's never been quite the same. No hearing or breathing. No movement no colour . Just silence. / No lyrics Just nothing. - For what might have been pre- NOOL although I know that isn't the case from the franzines and various things that are in print.
Well, NOOL could be official easily, and I'm not kidding.
But if I did, I'd have to follow what Warner would said to me, remove copyrighted stuff, and don't talk about anything not related to Warner I guess.
They are not fool, it doesn't cost them a dime to have NOOL, so they are passing the info (though not as easily as I would like)
New Order's management prefer us to remain indie, this way we don't have to conform to any label...
What is was meaning more was them using the internet as a marketing tool, something they have never done. Even to this day we still have to rely on the grapevine for news of forthcoming gigs etc, and the culture of myth and rumour that was prevalent in the mid 80s is still alive and kicking (though in which direction is still unclear).
Other bands have shown how powerful the net can be as a marketing tool, including things like exclusive downloads etc, but I guess they don't perceive a need to try too hard and sell anything!
It was quite surprising that London Records didn't do even a temp website indeed... the US did one at least.
But since when New Order does things as they would be expected to do anyways ;)
