Hm, "Your Silent Face" springs immediately to mind, as well as Every Little Counts (or is it Every Second Counts? I can't get it straight...)
"You've caught me at a bad time,so why don't you piss off" "Who do you think you're talking to?" "You're not the one who needs to tell me about the birds and the bees"
id have to say it was flicker from twisted tenderness..
"this world's out of reach, but i dont want it the people are creeps, that live here on it"
or maybe Sunrise
"your name might be god but you dont say that much to me your name i forgot but you dont say that much to me"
or maybe some others :-)
SPECIAL.
"It was always special It was like water down the drain I'm intoxicated Every time I hear your name I try to remember But nothing is the same"
"Best And Marsh". (They were so vindictive and bitter they decided to erase the vocals off the final mix.)

i think that thieves like us was partially barney trying to cling to idealism and fight back his own bitterness, but then he spits out "it cuts your life like a broken knife."
lonesome tonight is pretty bitter, especially the part where he spits

Special really stands out on republic! I think most people can relate to it in some form or another. Its a very painful/bittersweet song with some brilliant verses.
"Stop saying that you're caught in time, Look at your life before you start on mine,I'm not the kind of person that you need,I'm sick of tryingI mean that it's over"
callously convincing yourself that your better off washing your hands clean of the whole affair perhaps?
Though my favourite line comes right at the end..
"The traces of your memoryDon't belong with mine"
Beatiful!! just think about it... its a very subjective song
hrrm. two instances that immediately come to mind which haven't yet been mentioned here are:
from "Round and Round"
I don't care about what you do cos if you mess with me, I'll get rid of you
and the whole of "Breakdown"
I'm gonna leave you baby, so far behind cos you're upset and twisted and you're out of your mind and you know why I don't love you and we're wasting our time come on, give me a reason... help me make up my mind
There are cold days in this winter but it's not by my design I'm a victim of your misfortune in a terminal decline
I'm gonna leave you baby, so far behind cos you're fucked up and twisted and you're out of your mind and you know why I don't love you and we're wasting our time come on, give me a reason... help me make up my mind.
I don't know what lies in the future I don't know how long it will last... you could lose yourself in the task.
My heart is on fire, but it's burning low. I can't get much higher...there's nowhere to go.
Were you abandoned in your youth because if not, you will be soon
You are the king of nothing
----Republic is a very bitter album and lyrically, much better than Get Ready
I think it is NewOrder's live version of True Faith,
when Barney sings about Michael Jackson sleeping with little boys and Macauly Culkin.

Barney at his bitterest = definitely Liar. Of course, we all know who he had the knives out for that day! ;)
