just picked up a copy of the future sound of londons' ISDN album and i'm sure the first track starts with a sample of new order live wih barney saying "can you leave the lights alone please? stop flashing the fuckin lights!".
it's not credited, has anyone else heard this?
yes, i heard it and no i don't think it's Barney. That show was recorded live and i've always assumed it was one of the FSOL guys. They aren't the friendliest fellows and "stop flashing the fucking lights" sounds like something they'd say.
Of interest, they also released a CD called "Show" that is the complete set in order that is included on ISDN in it's abbreviated form. Well worth seeking. I think it was Promo-only but copies turn up here and there.
i'm gonna disagree there, the more i lsten to it the more im sure - you can even hear a little bit of Hooky's bass and it's a definite manchester accent. the album isn't a proper live job, it was communicated via isdn link from their studio and i'm glad i've never been to one of their gigs as it's fuckin boring, just never seems to get going.
it was recorded live. The version commercially available has been edited and restructured. An FSOL website may be more helpfull.
I think it's one of the most interesting CD's I own. The sounds they use to create their songs are so interesting. Your patience will be rewarded.
they do use some nice sounds, i've got dead cities and lifeforms too and they're great in parts, my problem with fsol is that when they throw in a beat it sounds great but you can be waiting for ever for it to happen. i'm always thinking that if they used more beats it would be so much better. supposed to be a new album soon i heard.
they are not a very accessible group, it definetly takes quite a few listens to get into it, and once your in and you understand what they are trying to achieve it makes much more sense and is very enjoyable.
If it's FSOL and beats that you're after, you should check out their 1st album Accelerator which has some very uplifting and moving beats of a progressive nature in some tunes - papua new guinea, expander and moscow being the main one's
but don't take my word for it, as music has the habit of provoking discussion, amongst many things
I thought that Papua New Guinea was their first album (or cascade if you don't want to count PNG as a propper album), isn't Accelerator their 6th or 7th?
The more and more i listen to this track, the more convinced im getting that it is barney, i don't know how it could possibly be him, why would he be at a FSOL gig on stage? but the resemblence is scary.
I'm not familiar with that particular FSOL version, but I can remember in one of the NO live videos (PFD / Academy / ?), a distressed Barney turns to the side of the stage and barks "Turn off the light you c*unt" between songs.

Nah mate, papua new guinea is a tune, not an album. as far as i'm aware accelerator is their 1st album
Well i remember them doing a mix [1-1/2 hours]for Radio 1 in '93,fucking wicked!lots of samples of 'Apocalypse Now etc.Accelerator is one of their early albums as[FSOL] but they were also 'Stakker-Humanoid'and Metropolis'been around a bit.

Mitch, I think Barn was having a go at the fact that they were performing in daylight rather than the lighting rig at the Melb BDO - the comment was something like "can you turn off that big light there, it's right in my f@#$in' eyes" as he pointed to the setting sun...

I know its a song, but im sure they released a album or EP of PNG reworks and remixes.
I looked it up on Cdnow, seems to support my view, but still im no authroity on this. :)

Thats what i originally thought, but after that i saw him doing all sorts of signals to the guys in the tower, so i dunno.
PNG was released with 7 mixes on the 12" totalling over 36 minutes of music but wasn't an album. Cascade had 5 tracks labled as parts 1-5 totalling over 32 minutes. Mini album maybe? 12" E.P. for my money. Accelerator was definitely an L.P. 10 different tracks and it says L.P. on it.;)
