Hiya,
Play the guitar but just came into a bass (an Ephiphone Thunderbird) and was wondering if anyone had any tips on approximating Hooky's sound and set up, ideally on a budget.
Looking to spend £50-100 on a 10-15W amp and then as little as possible on an effect or two, depending on what is required really.
Any advice would be much appreciated, cheers.

Nice choice for a bass, got one too. No idea on setup, pretty certain there are a few bass article scans lurking around in the forum.
You could get an Electro Harmonix Clone Theory pedal which is what Hooky actually uses however the reality is that you can get a used Boss Chorus pedal for around $50 and come close enough to his sound to fool all but the experts.
Then just turn your treble and bass all the way up and put the mid all the way down (I remember reading about him doing this) and you're good to go...
And bass practice amps are universally fucking horrible. Better to spend the money on a way to get the bass into your Hifi or PC instead.

I recommend a Korg Pandora PX4D - I use it for personal practice (with headphones) and for band practice - I just take the feed from the output and put it direct into the mixing desk. There's a multitude of built-in effects and amp simulators and simple drum patterns to rehearse to. Built in tuner. Also, there's an Aux In socket - you can feed the output from an MP3 player into it and play along with your fave songs - there may even be a bass canceller. It's expensive (about £100 online) but you get a lot of functionality in there. Plus it's good for guitar as well.
