I left my Substance Disc 1 at a friends so I bittorrented the album, and got this weird version that replaces the Temptation substance version with this 8 minute 42 second version, which is a bit more raw, a bit less polished and dancy, and has the lyrics in differnt order. What's up with this version? Anyone know?

Sounds like the original 12" version to me. The Substance 87 version is a rework mate. The original was released in '82.
Yeah I pretty much figured that was the case. I'm more used to the Substance version. I'm a firm believer that dance music shouldn't be overly rocky, like this version is.

It's gonna be raw cos that was the original version, like a lot of the songs they did in the 80's, they take a different form over the years when they were taken on the road and played live. Age Of Consent / BLT / True Faith being good examples.

There are four studio versions of Temptation really:
1982 - 7" Single - 5:24 1982 - 12" Single - 8:50 1987 - Substance - 7:01 1998 - Retro Disc 5 - 4:08
I have to say I much prefer the later versions (87 + 98) to the originals. I've never really been a big fan of the original 7" version and I have to be in the right mood to enjoy the 12". Those earlier recordings do have a sort of shambolic charm but the production's a bit over the shop and Barney's voice isn't quite there. I've always rated the 1987 version, a wise move re-recording for Substance 
I really wish they'd done a 12" version of the 1998 version because as it stands (on Retro disc 5) it's more like a radio edit than a full length song.
Even if it is a fooking great radio edit

the longer version is the better version, IMO. the substance version is like the cliff notes: the basic plot, with no real substance (excuse the pun).

There`s a 5th one Ally. On the 24HPP soundtrack,Temptation 87 is only 5:45-and its not a fade,its actually a edited version of the Substance mix.

I did remember the 24HPP Temptation and there's another version on the Something Wild soundtrack from 1986 but they're both just edits, rather than completely new versions. The SW soundtrack contains a 3:30 edit of the original 7" version.
The four I listed were specifically recorded as new by the band rather than somebody just editing existing versions.
I've always loved that original 12" version...the performance is a true benchmark of what is phenomenal about new order...or something like that, you all know what I mean.
One thing though....that really cheesy BOOP drum sound....it sounds so cheap and out of place with the rest of the production.... it always bugged me, but I let it go, cause i love the song so much.

i kind of flip back and forth. i got substance first, therefore had the 87... but then i got curious and bought 81-82, and swore i would never listen to the 87 again... never. but then, a couple of years ago, i put it in and noticed what a good pop song the 87 is... the 82 is more of a post-punk song... they are very different to me, and i enjoy them both, although if someone asked me to play new order's best song, it would be the 1982. yeah.
Ally, How about the SOMETHING WILD version? It sounds like a stripped down mix of 7" version but still sounds quite distinctively diff from the original 7" version.

Yes, the SW version is different, kind of a 7" edit. I don't remember the exact details, but the tracks starts to differ towards the end (after 2+ minutes perhaps?).

Read my post above john dougherty's and below steveone's! The Something Wild version just sounds like an edit of the original 7" to me although I'll compare them later on.
Giving them a quick comparison in iChoons just now they do seem to be cut from the same studio version but the SW edit is much shorter. Nothing new for Something Wild, just an edit.
i actually like the original version Temptation over the Substance 87 version. Just didnt like the Substance '87 of temptation, tell you the truth i hate the Substance version of Confusion, eeewwwww Barney and Co., what were you thinking of descrating Confusion
Original 12" is my fave - its the slow build-up that gets me
the 87 version just never had that.
I've alwyas preffered the 7" version myself, although I do like listining to the 12" straight after.

Can we get more investigation into this? (my turntable needs a new cartridge...)
anyone got an mp3 of the SW one?
I really remember it being completely different from both the 82 and Substance versions.... as in, all the instruments and tempo were different.... not just an edit.

Ok, I've just compared them and the SW OST version (3:30) was definitely cut from the original 7" 5:20 version. From Barney's high pitched guitar pluck at the very start through to his vocal segments; they're identical. I wouldn't say I'm any sort of musical expert but through headphones it would be pretty obvious if they were different studio takes.
Besides (at the time) a new studio version of Temptation would've provoked much more attention from the fanbase. Nobody's really too interested in Edits which is what the SW OST version is.
Case closed.
Original 12", followed 87 version, original 7" and then whatever, for me... Gotta have a longer version for the full effect... Didn't hear the original version until a few years after the Substance one, but I prefer the 'early' NO sound...
