The best of Electronic on the way?

I just read, on www.depeche-mode.com, an interview with Craig DeGraff, the man who was behind NewOrder compilations and the Future Retro remix project. He meanwhile dropped the following:

"Right now the main project I'm working on is the new Pet Shop Boys record Fundamental. We will be releasing it in the U.S. on June 27th and I'm very excited about that. I'm also wrapping up a best of Electronic with help from the band - that should be out late summer/early fall."

If this is true, then I would love to but such an album...but they would have to include b-sides and such too.

Nah, I meant if they did a greatest hits - which would I assume be stuff off albums and singles, I'd only buy it if there was a second CD of b-sides and rarities...

EDIT: Although if they rereleased Electronic and RTP as deluxe versions, I wouldn't complain...

I like Raise the Pressure, it sounds a bit dated now, but there's some good pop on there.

Get the idea is ain't very popular generally. Maybe the Prozac popping made it too sickly sweet for some.

They're a bit boring aren't they?

First album was okay in a novel kind of way but pretty soon the joy of hearing Bernard and Johnny hamming it up together wore off and subsequent records just became the biggest yawnfests imagineable. Besides, those people and critics who craved for a Smiths/New Order fusion were quite rightly satiated with that first eponymous album but then after that they had nothing much else to offer up that was exactly mindblowing did they? Well, apart from roping in the bloody Pet Shop Boys on a few numbers, which made them even more boring in my view.

Most people - me included - don't really give a toss about Electronic these days anyway. I mean, the amount of apathy that greets New Order records / compilations as it is makes you wonder just what the point of an Electronic "best of" really is - apart from satisfying the devoted fanbase and not much else.

I think what is pissing me off more than anything is - we keep getting all these reissues and remasters of - god help us - Revenge, and Electronic but naff all to indicate that the DEFINITIVE New Order singles/b-sides/12"versions/albums remasters and repackages are ever going to materialise. And I'm sure everyone will agree that THESE are what everyone REALLY wants to see released....... Shows just where the respective record companies priorities lie when we will never get to see "Recycle" or whatever it was supposed to be called coming out but we DO keep getting all these other useless half-measures like Revenge box sets and Electronic anthologies.... pah!

Right now The Cure and Depeche Mode are doing the same thing, and London/WB know that NO sells to the same audience. My guess is that they're waiting because they dont want to compete for the market, and they're hoping the JD movie will create more interest in the product. If it's going to happen, it will be late 2007 or 2008.

I guess you just proved us just how much you really support or give a damn about NEW ORDER, and its subsidiaries. Regardless, there are people out there, including me, that would buy. If you don't like ELECTRONIC, then don't. How many albums or songs have you put out??? Besides, it is NOT your money that is being spent! Point taken!

I really hope if they release an end-all, fook-off definitive anthology (something "Recycle"-ish), it is at the tail end of their careers, not some half-hearted attempt at a singles compilation with a new album on the way that bloody ignores some of their best work (rarities, instrumentals, B-Sides, extended mixes, radio edits, etc. etc. )

Here's hoping for The Definitive New Order: 1980-20??

True. They are not considered has-beens that's why to make a full, complete, ultimate, etc. collection is to mark an end of a career. :) So we actually should be glad that the band is still active and plans to release new stuff. ___

I think, it's irrelevant to compare with the Pet Shop Boys' marketing efforts just because the PSB have always been high-prolific artists. One sometimes wonders how many songs in a session these guys record to fill LPs, singles, compilations, remixes etc.

Not really, I quite like them. I think the debut and Twisted Tenderness are fantastic albums and I definitely rate TT above Get Ready which I thought was a middling to average record at best (aside from Crystal). Granted, Electronic's Raise The Pressure was a bit shite/pedestrian but I reckon the first and third albums Barney and Johnny came out with are ones to be proud of for any band.

Bit of a sweeping statement regarding "most people" but I'll run with it: even if an Electronic compilation would only appeal to a cult fanbase I'm struggling to see what's so bad about that? It's not bothering anyone and might actually increase New Order's appeal and introduce new fans to the fold. If there's some new material on it the fanbase is satisfied too which means everyone wins really. I don't really see the purpose of moaning to buggery about it, what's the harm being done?

Steady! We've had just one low-key side project reissue which was Revenge's One True Passion v2.0 on the Factory Nostalgia label LTM. There's been talk of an Electronic Best Of for close to seven years now and it's never appeared. I've got bugger all confidence the one reported above will happen but I'm happy to be proved wrong, especially if it has some new material on it. Besides, Electronic and Revenge are handled by entirely different record labels from New Order so it's not as if they're being given higher priority over them; moan at London Records who's in charge of NO's back-catalogue!

Again, you're barking up the wrong tree here. New Order are on London/Warners, Revenge released it's compilation on LTM and Electronic are (were) on Parlophone: three completely unrelated labels.

I agree with you about London Records' ineptitude though and a remastered set of the original albums would be nice. Something along the lines of the Pet Shop Boys 2xCD reissues so we're not just fleeced for the same material again but get a new disc with all the vinyl only stuff from the 1980s like the remastered Perfect Kiss 12", Let's Go '85 Vocal etc; that would be magic!

Cheers I completely understand what you're saying though, London should pull it's finger out regarding proper reissues, they've done piss-poor job so far

Retro was not worth the plastic it was pressed on.

The bonus disc, nice booklet and cover art made Retro worthwhile for me!

I just hope that this best of has the two missing tracks that were discussed... or am did I dream that these existed?

I thought the eponymous album was, forgive me here...pure sublime perfection. it was SO freaking satisfying to listen to as a single entity. IT was such a treat for me when it came out.

The following albums were realllly unsatisfying for me,,,they barely got a third listen; the group seemed to veer away too much from the accessible style they established in the first album...imo.

BUT...if there were a compilation that were put together by Barney and his friend Johnny I would buy it and give it all another chance.

being a clubMusic person, I'd love to hear listenable remixes of the later stuff, too.
