hmm seems to point towards insanity and/or epilepsy.

I'd go with insanity or epilepsy too. Much more powerful song than if it's just about a drinking binge.

One of Ian Curtis' duties when he had a proper job was to advise people with disabilities what benefits they were entitled to. He supposedly made frequent visits to the local mental hospital and wrote it about a patient he befriended. Kind of ironic with hindsight.

Yes, I've read that the song was inspired by an epileptic patient that Ian worked with. So when he was diagnosed, it caused him more stress because he'd seen extreme cases of the condition firsthand.

It's funny this topic should come up. I was just thinking about making a donation to the Epilepsy Research Foundation on Ian's birthday (July 15th).

Thats story is what is in Touching from A Distance, that he wrote it about a woman with epilepsy at his work.

This is correct. Kinda weird that he wrote that song before his elepsy developed.

And yet the extended 12" version of the song from late-1979 features an added verse that might perhaps locate the song more specifically in Ian's own personal experience with epilepsy, in effect making the song more of his own than it was when previously about another person. Note the change between the older lyrics discussing the epileptic woman as an object ("she") and the added verse addressing Ian himself as subject ("I").

"When the darkness broke in, I just broke down and cried"... I always thought that too - that the later version was Ian either making/recognising the 'she's experience (as) his own, or acknowledging that he was in fact the 'she' of the first few verses... Always thought it was about epilepsy, too...

I believe it was a relative of his who worked in a mental home; he worked in a rehab centre, where he became friendly with a girl who had epilpesy - don't know the name, but she died during a fit. She was supposedly the reason for writing the song, but he was taking large doses of phenobarb amongst others.......

I find it quite ironic that when they perform this song live, the lights are crazy........just great for triggering a seizure!!!!!!

You mean when New Order performs it live. Strobe lights and such stuff were banned at Joy Division gigs for that very reason.

I thought I had read that Ian was inspired by a woman with epilepsy that he had read about in the paper or something. Maybe this is something else? I'm wrong a lot.

I wish they'd get rid of all the f'ing lights- I can't see them when they perform on stage...:)
