Is Jetstream about Sex?

Jetstream was the first song I heard when I became a NO fan last fall. I enjoyed listening to the song so much, until the 25th time when I stopped to think the underlying message in the lyrics. What I thought was a good song, now makes me cringe a bit because I couldn't believe what the song suggested. Did Bernard intend to write a song about... you know? Pay attention to the bold face in the lyrics

Bearing in mid Barney was prepared to wite a song about his cock being like the M1 or how on live versions of many songs he was penis/sex obsessed (Subculture - I like fucking in the park...) no it wouldn't surprise me.

Doesn't make Comrade cringe, Coz. :D

Think I'll go have another listen...

Never really thought about it until you mentioned it, but yes, it does seem like a good interpretation of the song. Still doesn't make Comrade cringe, mind.

Did anyone find out where the sample at the start was from?

I remember thinking it was terribly important at the time of release.

(Oo-er! Did you see what I wrote? Time of release! Sounds a bit saucy, dun't it?)

Explains to some extent the Jizzstream moniker.... Or maybe that was because its just wank:shrug:

is cozzie obsessed with sex. i think you can accept these lyrics on face value.

I don't think it means anything serious...after all, it's a cheesy pop song for crying out loud. I think it's one of the worst songs they've ever made. I don't mind the duet with Ana Matronic; I love New Order, and the Scissor Sisters have some good songs. But it's the song itself that I immensely dislike. It's definitely NOT the song I would recommend to a person who's just getting into New Order.

I always assumed it was, the "engines push" line is a dead giveaway. What's the big deal though? Most of the great songs in music have some sexual tension in it, be it blatant or not, this is definitely not one of them. Beyond the drums/machine whatever kicking in at the chorus and the Ana Matronic bits I pretty much loathe it.

When I was a more pure and innocent sort I was fond of the, "never thought of you in a sexual way before," line in TBTHOG, but there's been sexual innuendo and blatant sexual references throughout Barney's career. No big deal, it's whether the song sucks arse, or is genius that matters. Unfortunately this song hits mostly along the former angle.

I think someone's obsessed here with sex and therefore sees it everywhere, nothing else matters

I'm not obsessed about sex. It's just that I feel that the lyrics are a dead giveaway. I agree that most rock songs allude to sex. It's a legitimate question.

And here I thought the song was about getting high.

Yeah, I know it's rock and roll. It's just that I couldn't believe NO would be so obvious about it. I guess it goes back to Barney's changing lyrical talent.

I always thought it was about airplanes and teenage lovelorn angst.

I assumed it was about sex from the gitgo...in a very obvious cliche mile-high-club sort of way. even more obvious than most sex rock songs.

not one of barneys deeper lyrics

 i too have never thought of the song in any other way, shape or form. i'm glad that they use the phrase 'engines push' without the use of the words pistons, crankshafts and rods.

I found it pretty obvious; that's why the song is so goofy.

i've always thought it was about sex, but i also took it to be a double entendre about getting high

It could be about basket-weaving with the indiginous peoples of South America for all I care... Still not gonna listen to it again in a hurry... :evil4: NO songs are all about sex, aren't they?

Why on earth don't you think you are obsessed by sex? You're a teenager, you've GOT to be obsessed by sex!

The proof is right there - if the lyrics are so obvious to you, surely they're obvious to everyone else too. So the only reason you brough it up is because you're obsessed. You probably get all excited every time you read that someone has written the word sex on your thread.

Jetstream is my favorite song on WFTSC and in my opinion it should have been the first single from the album.

Its kinda cheesy....

But J-E-T is one of the best pop songs NO have ever written. its incredibly catchy, its got a great chorus, and it has a lot of really cool electronics.

I think JET is one of the best pop singles NO has ever released. Thats prolly why it got to number 3 on the billboard dance charts in the US. I have heard JET in dance clubs several times, and people always went mad and danced to it.

Its vastly underrated. However, most NO fans that I know personally love the song. JET is up there with BLT as obe of thier best pure pop singles.

As for the lyrics, I always thought the song was about a twisted long distance relationship. I wouldnt put too much thought into that though.

I wish they would play JET more live though. It went down really well in Chicago last year, and its a much better song than Working Overtime.

I quite like sexy sex. Not a teenager, though, so I'll need some other excuse.

I prefer the Jetsream sexmix... er, remix, it's mint.

As opposed to an illegitimate question? :evil4:

Cozzie, dear, this is the second thread I've read today with the quote being your standard response to people's posts to your threads. Try something new! :)

But in answer to your question, I don't think Jetstream is just about Sex (with a capital S). I think Jetstream, like all New Order songs, is open to interpretation -- that's the beauty of New Order. I don't think New Order songs can be pigeonholed.

Silly trite lyrics sung to a very catchy tune. Anyway, like many songs, you can look at the literal, surface level meaning, which is about jets and travel and all that rot. It always seemed to me that the underlying meaning was about sex, and that the high was a high from sex/love, not necessarily from drugs.

I always thought it actually was about a long distance relationship. But of course, what are these people going to do when they finally see each other, go bowling?

:confused2: of course it's about sex What did you think it was about aeroplane spotting? I'd love to know what the folks who didn't think it was about sex thought it was about? any theories people?

Comrade didn't think about it at all.

You missed the word 'jetstream' which has the most obvious male sexual connotation.

It's an autobiographical tale of Barney's best experiences in club class!

And... Wow! J-E-T made someone an NO fan...

Anyone else in this club???

Guys, I don't understand why are you on my case for this. Yes, I know I'm a teenager, but it's just strange that Barney would write such an obvious song and let the band perform. I mean, I thought that Jetstream would make a great elevator music or "on-hold" tunes on the phone. Seriously, by the 25th time I listened to this I said, "Hold up! I couldn't believe what I was listening, what I was singing!"

Good for you. Either do I. Have seen alot of discouraging stuff on here glamourising drugs. I have a friend who's son was into speed and have seen first hand the damage that drugs can do to a family.

Not to mention the selfish drug addicted assholes who have babies and leave them to be brought up by the grandparents.

Anyway, let's get back to the topic
