I just read over on NME.com that Top of the Pops is done! That really blows!

Well, at least there's places like youtube.com to see performances of our favourite artists on TOTP...

never watched TOTP...it sounds like america's Solid Gold? does anyone remember that?

I used to love the Solid Gold dancers as a boy ;) (this was broadcast in my home country of New Zealand).

Also loved the Hot Gossip dancers on the Kenny Everett Video Show (whoohoo).

I for one am glad that totp is going.For the past 10 years it's been more of a dance contest rather than a music show.Hopefully this will spell the begining of the end for all those fucking shite boy/girl bands.Bring back the Tube.

No but I remember "America's Top Ten" from the late 80s with the fuck awful Kasey Kasem. Should have stuck to do doing Scooby Do and Shaggy I say. Although saying that it was probably the last time America embraced multiple British acts; eg. NO, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, before rejecting Britpop.

Methinks a Brit invasion is long overdue. It's a piss poor showing when James Blunt is the first Brit to have an American no. 1 since Elton John shed tears over the death of Diana.

Can't understand.TOTP survived the likes of RENE and RENATA,THE GOOMBAY DANCE BAND,JIVE BUNNY,CRAZY FROG,yet when you get some decent bands on like RED HOT CHILLIES doing a live set in the BBC car park,and now it's not flavour of the month. "It's facing fierce competition from 24 hr music stations and downloads..." WTF?? Nothing wrong with more music on telly,if there was a problem of overexposure,WTF are we still getting an increase of reality series on.

THe program's only as good as the music that's on it,I think the only way they could have improved is going along the route of THE TUBE,making it music and interviews.

It may be the end of an era but I, for one, am glad it's going. It's turned into a kiddie pop show over the last lot of years. Get the in!

The crocodile tears from the BBC was quite surprising, seeing as they'd buggered it about for quite a while, shunting it from Thursday nights on BBC1 - the slot it had for over thirty years! - to a moveable slot on BBC2. It's the same death-by-a-thousand cuts that Brookside suffered for the last eighteen months of its life.

Against all the other music tv output, it was poorly supported and became an irrelevence. It had also been buggered about by people trying to re-invent it every few years "to stay fresh and current".

What do I remember? All sorts of stuff but Soft Cell doing Tainted Love and Marc Almond's black eyeliner. It's quite sad to think that generations of musos will now never get to fulfill that small ambition to appear on it, as hollow it may've been or became. The Clash famously refused to appear on it.
